Tips Offered During National Electrical Safety Month

Being aware of some electrical hazards can go a long way in reducing the risk of house fires, injuries, and loss of property. This month, NIPSCO is joining Electrical Safety Foundation International in commemorating National Electrical Safety Month.
ESFI says there are a few simple steps you can take to keep yourself and your home safe.
Check all extension cords before using them, looking for cracked or frayed sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections. Don’t plug extension cords into one another, and don’t staple electrical cords to walls.
Make sure all major appliances are plugged directly into a wall outlet, and don’t plug more than one heat-producing appliance into an outlet. Only use light bulbs of the correct wattage.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 48,000 house fires reported each year involve some type of electrical problem. More safety tips can be found at esfi.org.
