The North Judson-San Pierre School Board will work with an Indianapolis-based company to identify potential cost savings with regard to energy consumption. Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Boyd says Performance Services submitted the lone quote for the project.
“This is not obligating this board to anything at this point other than to allow us to work with them to bring forth proposals to improve the energy efficiency of the high school/middle school, particularly in the areas of lighting, modernizing the lighting fixtures, particularly in the area of controls for HVAC and probably to address the major problems at the swimming pool,” Boyd told the board.
The N.J.-S.P. School Board previously rejected a more comprehensive proposal from Performance Services for $5.6 million worth of district-wide energy efficiency improvements. Boyd says those needs remain, but he’s tried to prioritize what he calls “major utility hang-ups” that can be paid for with money from the corporation’s anticipated bond issue.
Estimates indicate N.J.-S.P. will have about $860,000 to spend on improvements after replenishing their budget reserves. Boyd says they need to keep viability of the facilities in mind.
“Our equipment is getting old, and much of it is out of date. If we don’t stay up on that, we’re going to get to the crisis point with facilities that maybe we were at with the general fund budget before, and we don’t want that. So if we can begin to address the major things in some sort of a priority order with the financing that’s available to us, that’s probably a smart move,” Boyd said.
No timeline has been announced for developing that priority list. Plans do call for the reconfiguring of the existing middle school space to accommodate elementary school classrooms for the 2017-18 academic year.
