7/30/2013 Notes From Nubi - Would You Like to Buy a Yard?

I overheard Mom talking about the town having a yard sale on August 10th.  Boy, would I like to attend that!  People who want to take part in the yard sale are supposed to signup at the Water Department by 4 p.m. on August 5th so they can be put on a map.

Now I've got a reasonably nice backyard.  It's not too big (although it could be twice the size - hint, hint) and it's reasonably clean.  But there are a few other yards I've seen in town that would be nice to have.  Let's face it, my yard is really uneven and the only shaded area is between the house and the garage, good thing I like the sun.

See a couple of years ago, when we had an ice storm, one of the trees in the backyard dropped some branches which broke part of the fence and hit the electrical wire running from the pole to the house.  That summer we had both of the trees in the back taken out so they couldn't do any more damage.  It's a good thing too, because the one that dropped the branches was beginning to hollow out, and the other one was a walnut tree that dropped nuts all over the place and made it hard to mow.

Mom would like to do something with the backyard, but she's not exactly the outdoors type.  So I was thinking that we should get one of those maps and look at those yards that will be for sale on August 10th.  Maybe we can find something that isn't too fussy, has a nice patio area, and maybe a bush or two for me to use for shade.  I'm just not sure how we would get it moved to our house.

Signup for Town-Wide Yard Sale by 8/5/2013

Preschool Scholarship Program @ Starke County Community Foundation

Why should a child go to preschool? To be more likely to read at the proper grade level. To be more likely to graduate from high school and to go on to further education after that. And, simply to be ready when they do start school.

Starke County 4-H Fair Schedule

Did you know that Basenji's are sighthounds?  That means that I use my eyes more than my nose for hunting.  Maybe that's why I found a copy of the program for the Starke County 4-H Fair.

Since a lot of people are interested in what will be held when, I made mom copy the web address so you can get your own copy.  Just here and go to the website that has the short two page schedule; for a really, really detailed preview of events, fair officers, officials, awards, etc., click here.

Looking For Medical Information?

Looking for medical information but not sure where to go?  Not sure if what you found on the internet is really medically sound or just an advertisement?

The North Judson-Wayne Township Library has added a Medical Reference page to our website.  While most of the sites listed came from a list of the top 15 medical sites, we also added a few trusted sites that weren’t on the list.

There are three divisions – General Medical Information, Drug Information & Interaction, and Managing Your Health.  Hopefully these will provide you with the information you want, but if not, you can always stop in for a visit.  If we don’t have what you need, we’ll be glad to try to get it for you from another library.

Notes from Nubi - Did You Know There's A Mint Festival in the United Kingdom?

I found out the most amazing thing!

When Mom was checking out how many hits the Library’s website and blog had for Mint Festival information - statistics really make her happy - she noticed that we were getting several from Europe.  Now why, she wondered, would people in the United Kingdom be interested in a Mint Festival being held in North Judson, Indiana?

Well, they aren’t!  I mean don’t get me wrong, I like our Mint Festival and have a great time at it, but I wouldn’t travel 3,828 miles over the Atlantic Ocean to get here!  Turns out that in September there is a Mint Festival in Leeds, United Kingdom - which makes much more sense if you live in Europe and are searching for Mint Festival information.

Compared to our Mint Festival, which originated after the Bicentennial in 1776, the Leeds Mint Festival, originated in 2012, is just a toddler.  “The folks behind Mint Club, Mint Warehouse & Cocoon In the Park in Leeds launched the 10,000 capacity festival in 2012. Mint Festival takes place at Lotherton Hall, in Leeds and hosts DJs from underground techno and deep house to Drum & Bass, Dubstep, House and Trance.”

So if you will be in the UK in September, check out their website (UK Mint Festival) and make your plans accordingly.  Hope they have as much fun there as we did here.
