Notes From Nubi - Eat A Red Apple Day

One of my favorite fruits is apples.  And when Mom learned that Saturday is "Eat A Red Apple Day" she thought it would be a good theme for our Saturday READ Jr. Tail Time.  She said it was a very good day to tell stories about apples anyway because that's the night that Santa Claus is coming to North Judson and, just like him, a lot of apples wear red "suits."

So we've got apple stories, apple coloring pages, and a craft - but Mom says the craft has nothing to do with apples, except we will be using the color red.   I'm looking forward to seeing you here at the library at 11 a.m. this Saturday.  Hey, maybe we should all wear red just like apples and Santa Claus!

(Here's a picture of me from last year guarding the Angel Tree.  My Aunt Sue got me the suit but it was a little too small.)

2012 Library Angel Tree

Did you know that by picking up one extra item when doing your Christmas shopping you can bring as much joy to an unknown child as you do to the children in your own family?

The North Judson-Wayne Township Library is accepting new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items to go under our annual Angel Tree.

OR, if you prefer, we have a list of 21 children who would benefit by being “adopted” into your family.

Our deadline for these items is December 15th so they can be delivered in time.  So when you do your shopping shine up your halo by picking up an extra item or two and then listen for the bells to signal that you’ve received your wings.

Items can be dropped off at the library Monday through Saturday during regular business hours.

Mom Made A Boo-Boo!

I found out why no one made it to our last READ Jr. Tail Time - Mom made a mistake!

You see, next year we're moving our sessions from the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month to the 2nd and 4th Saturdays.  (Mom says that she has some group thing that often has programs on the first Saturday of the month that she needs to attend.)  Sooooo, that meant moving the Tail Times.

But when she told the people attending, she sorta said that we would start the change in November, not January.  So it's ALL her fault that no one came on the 3rd.  But it's OK, I forgive her (sorta have to because she controls all the treats at home); I just hope the people who showed up for READ Jr. Tail Time on November 10th can forgive her.

Anyway, this Saturday we will have a Tail Time so make sure you come.  I'll be looking for you.

Everglades of the North: The Story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh

A documentary of the Grand Kankakee Marsh will be presented on PBS this week. Jim Shilling has sent us the following information as to time and station. Will you watch?

I have mentioned the Grand Kankakee Marsh before. My father was born north of Hamlet in 1893 on an "island". Any little sand knoll or rise out of the water of the marsh was called an "island". All of the islands were named. There was Crab Island, Coon Ridge, White Woman's Island and on and on. These names are often mentioned in the old history books, but very seldom identified as to where they are.

Before 1900, the only way my father and his family could get to Hamlet (the nearest trading area) was by boat. Or perhaps in a real dry season, by horseback. Or walking in the winter time on top of the ice. Grandma didn't really like this type of pioneer living, so eventually she and Grandpa sold the land and moved to Knox in 1897. Grandma liked a little more social life. Remember, no cell phones, not even a land phone, no TV's, no radios, no mail service out in this location. They were on their own.

That was before the area was drained.

A new documentary has just been produced about this marsh, which included much of Starke County. It is called Everglades of the North - the story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh. A promo of this great video can be seen at - http://www.youtube.com/watchv=lh6RWgyDnJw&feature=player_detailpage.
The full one-hour program has just been released and can be viewed:

Monday, November 5
WYIN, Lakeshore Public Television in Merrillville, IN - 8 p.m. CST.

Thursday, November 8
WNIT Public Television in South Bend at 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST).

Former Starke County Historian, Marvin Allen, was interviewed at our museum by the production crew, and will appear in the film. This story is part of Starke County history. I hope you enjoy it.
