See You At the Fair!

New leadership brings new ideas, so this year when you’re browsing the booths at the Starke County 4-H Fair keep an eye out for current, and former, staff of the North Judson-Wayne Township Library and stop by for a visit. There will be a table top version of Corn Hole Toss for the kids and we’re also bringing along a simpler version of our Break Out Box for people to try. We’ve streamlined it so it won’t take you 45 minutes to find the clues and open the box. But, if you want to have the full experience, we’ll be glad to schedule a session for you and your team at the library.

Kelsie Purcell Named Director @ North Judson-Wayne Township Library

In July our library director, Michael Booth, submitted his resignation and the North Judson-Wayne Township Library Board began their search for a new director. 

After interviewing several candidates the Library Board decided to offer the position to Kelsie Purcell, currently our children’s librarian.  Kelsie accepted the offer and will begin her duties as director of the North Judson-Wayne Township Library on October 15^th.

So the next time you see Kelsie take a few minutes to congratulate her on the new position. 

Mint Festival Information

Today we created our yearly Mint Festival page on the library's website. As we receive more information about events and activities it will be added so you can find the information you seek in a centralized area.

Are You an Oatmeal Lover?

We won’t take all the blame, BUT…I think one of the reasons Mother Nature may be delaying Spring is because of us.

You see, Ms. Kelsie is making plans for our Summer Reading Program and is in need of large oatmeal containers for one of the projects.  So if Mother Nature delays Spring that means that more of you might be serving your family some nice hot oatmeal for breakfast.

Or maybe you’re planning on baking some cookies for some event coming up – a bake sale, birthday gift - oatmeal cookies always go well.

When your oatmeal container is empty, please recycle it by donating it to the North Judson-Wayne Township Library.  There’s no need to rush through your current container, unless you or your family are BIG oatmeal fans.  Ms. Kelsie won’t need to prepare them until the end of May so you have plenty of time to eat your share.

Our New Sign is Up & Running!

Here is a video of our new sign!  As you can see general information (hours, closures, etc.) will be in a golden hue, library sponsored programs are in green, and community activities are in blue.  So if your local organization is having an event let us know and we'll be glad to add it to our sign.

New eBooks @ the North Judson-Wayne Township Library

A mix of fiction and non-fiction, some old and some new titles have been added to our ebook collection this week.  

The Shakespeare collection will make it easier for students to have access to his plays and gives us a second copy for circulation. 

The Narnia series by C.S. Lewis has always been a popular set for our younger patrons.  Having the collection as ebooks will make it easier to carry his books with on vacation or day trips out of town.  

And with Stephen King's The Dark Tower coming out in August it doesn't hurt to have copies of the series as ebooks for you speed readers out there.  Now if you finish one book in the middle of the night you won't have to wait until morning to check out the next book and start reading.

3/21/2016 Easter Drop-In Craft

The Children's Department of the North Judson-Wayne Township Library will have an Easter Drop-In Craft on March 21, 2016. It will be held all day from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the children's room. Each child can decorate some eggs and make a sun catcher.

3/17/2016 Book Buddies Play Performance

The Book Buddies have worked hard over the past 5 weeks learning their lines and rehearsing their play.  On March 17th the public is invited to watch as they present their puppet show. 

3/15/2016 On the Town (Movie)

Three sailors on a 24-hour pass -- Gabey (Gene Kelly), Chip (Frank Sinatra), and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) -- decide to soak up the sights and sounds of New York. Each one finds romance within those 24 hours: Gabey with aspiring dancer Ivy Smith (Vera-Ellen), Chip with lady cabbie Hildy Esterhazy (Betty Garrett), and Ozzie with paleontology student Claire Huddesten (Ann Miller). That's all, right? Wellll....Ivy passes herself off as a celebrity, but she's actually a kootch dancer in Coney Island. Claire and the boys inadvertently topple a dinosaur replica at the Museum of Anthropological History. And Hildy breaks any number of speeding laws attempting to get the lovers together and straighten out all misunderstandings.

The Ideal Carnegie Library

In the following article the word buildings is not misspelled.  Both Andrew Carnegie and James Bertram believed in simplified spelling which meant cutting out unpronounced letters. 

James Bertram, Andrew Carnegie’s secretary, held strong views on what an ideal Carnegie library should look like. A strong believer of a simple-is-best approach, Bertram frowned upon excessive detailing and other features which he considered excessive and unnecessary. To him, a “Greek temple or a modification of it” was a cause of waste. He also expressed strong views against anything he believed wasted space, always citing the ideal of “effective accommodation... consistent with good taste.” As the program progressed - and conflicts between architects, towns and Bertram increased - Bertram increased the amount of supervision regarding the layout and planning of libraries. By 1907 he began requiring all libraries to submit plans and elevations before any grant would be awarded. In 1911, with the help of leading authorities from the American library and architectural professions, Bertram produced a leaflet titled “Notes on Library Bildings,” which was sent to all communities receiving a promise of funds from the Carnegie Corporation. 

“Notes on Library Bildings” reflected many of Bertram’s ideals for the perfect public library. Specific recommendations included: 

• A rectangular building • One storey and basement, with outside staircase• One large room subdivided by bookcases• A basement four feet below grade• Ceiling heights of nine feet for the basement and 12 to 15 feet for the main floor• Rear and side windows seven feet from the floor to allow continuous wall shelving• A lecture room as subordinate feature in the basement.

“Notes on Library Bildings” also included a series of plans, labelled A-F, which dictated the layout and placement of a Carnegie library at a variety of scales. Common among all plans was the use of book cases around the walls and the use of additional bookstacks for internal partitions and separation of functions.

The NJWT library was built using plan A. While the upstairs still retains the look of the original, the lower level has undergone many changes over the years.

We've Been Branded!

While we were closed on President’s Day I attended a webinar on how to “brand” the Axis360 Magic Wall for our ebooks.  Because of that I have made a couple of changes that will appear on your computer when you visit the site.  (Sorry, it doesn’t work with the Axis360 Magic Wall for your tablet or phone but I’m exploring how to make changes in that area next.)

When you visit our Magic Wall you will notice that in the upper left corner there is a picture of the library.  Click on that picture and it will take you to our website where you can see listings of local activities, festivals in the area, library and community calendars, college and FAFSA information, links for kids, our hours and many, many other items we think you want/need to know.

Directly underneath the picture is a row listing Magic Wall, App Zone (information about adding this site to your tablet, ebook reader, or phone), Browse by Subject (for a listing of subjects you might be interested in reading), and a new listing called Series.  When you click on Series it takes you to a listing of the series we have as ebooks.  Currently there are 10 listed, just click on the series title and it will show you the books available.

So stay tuned, who knows what marvels will be revealed next time?

We've Added a New Page to Our Website

Today I added "A Healthy You" page to our website because there are some things that come across my desk that just don't fit in as news but you need to know to keep your family healthy. Most of the information will be kept up for at least one month but will be changed on a regular basis.

Since February is Healthy Heart Month there are some articles from the Starke County branch of Purdue Extension, information about the Zika virus, and online references which will be updated as more sites are discovered or listed in articles.
