When is Trick or Treat/Trunk or Treat?

It’s Coming!  There’s nothing that can be done to stop it!  Now’s the time to run to the stores and stock up!  Don’t wait until the last minute or all the good candy will be gone!

Wait – “good candy will be gone”?

Yep, it’s October which means that soon the streets will be filled with children rushing from porch to porch asking, “Trick or Treat?”  But WHEN will our homes be overrun with these small creatures asking for candy?

I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for that information and added a Trick or Treat/Trunk or Treat subpage to the NJ-WTPL’s webpage.  Places and times will be added as they are found.  I’m sure it won’t take long for that information to filter out to the public so check in frequently to find out when YOUR neighborhood can expect to be invaded.

Trick or Treating With Allergies

We've started our Halloween page on the Library's website and it made me think that not ALL children find Halloween to be as much fun as their friends.

When I was a child we never thought about allergies when we went trick or treating, if we knew some type of treat “didn’t agree with us” we just traded it to our brother/sister/friend for candy that did agree with us.  The thought that the dislike was caused by an allergy never occurred to us, and I’m not sure it occurred to our parents either.

Now allergies often seem to rule children’s lives, there are so many different types to consider and treats that were staples at school events are now banned from the buildings.

Some children actually might find Trick or Treating to be a danger to their very lives.  That’s one of the reasons that we have included sites where you can find treats appropriate for children with allergies.  Some sites offer allergy-free recipes if you are hosting a party or sending something to school, while some offer alternatives to candy treats.

One suggestion is to create some homemade craft kits to hand out.  If you are of the “crafty persuasion” this gives you a chance to clean out all those odds and ends you have left over from earlier projects.  You include all the items needed (except for the glue or sewing needles) to make simple beaded necklaces/bracelets/pins, puppets, bookmarks, a little pompom creature, etc. If you aren’t crafty there are store bought items:  small tubs of clay, puzzles, card games, pencils/pens, spider rings, stickers, etc.

There’s even a color – Teal – that you can display at your house that will let parents know that you offer allergy free treats or alternative items.  You can learn more about the Teal Pumpkin Project at https://www.foodallergy.org/education-awareness/teal-pumpkin-project.

So this year you can be prepared for all those little spooks and goblins that go door to door asking, “Trick or Treat!”

Halloween Raises Awareness to those with Food Allergies

Published: October 28, 2014
By: Mitch Columbe, WKVI

Parents who have kids with food allergies need to be cautious this Halloween when trick or treating. A bag of Halloween candy isn’t all treats for the one in thirteen U.S. kids who suffer from certain food allergies. IU Health Laporte Hospital Nurse Practitioner Kim Minich encourages parents to go trick or treating with their children to make sure they do not eat candy until they get home. Parents should inspect each piece of candy.

“Kids that are excited they are going to open anything you know but letting them make sure they get home read through those labels and most parents are pretty good to know the ingredients and things like that but always reading through. I would say not to accept any homemade goods. Because you don’t know with the kitchens the way they were prepared things like that,” said Minich.

Minich added that there are some gluten free candies out there for children with allergies to eat as an alternative.

Check Addresses of Sex Offenders before Halloween

Published: October 22, 2014
By: Anita Goodan, WKVI

Parents should be aware of who is living in the area before taking children trick-or-treating.

Online tools are available to learn the location of sex offenders in a certain area.

There are currently 35 registered sex offenders in Starke County, 21 sex offenders listed in Pulaski County, 88 offenders in Marshall County and 183 sex offenders in LaPorte County.

Learn the addresses of these offenders before children go out to avoid these homes.

According to the United States Department of Justice, 80 percent of all addresses have at least one offender living within one mile. Forty-five percent of sexual assault victims are under the age of 12 and 75 percent of victims know their attacker. Over half of all sexual assaults occur within one mile of the victim’s home.

Notes from Nubi - I've Missed You!

It has been weeks since I’ve been to the library for a visit.  First mom was preparing for the new automation system, then they migrated to the new system, now mom is working on the patron files and on fixing the little glitches everyone finds.  How I wish this would all end, so does mom.

Anyway mom doesn’t know it, but I’ve been spending my hours at home on her laptop.  (I make sure that it’s plugged in so I don’t wear down the battery, so far she hasn’t caught on.)  This can be pretty boring, there really aren’t that many sites for dogs by dogs.  There is that Disney Channel program, Dog With A Blog, but I don’t think that’s for real.

But while I was on the internet I found this really cute idea for a doggy costume.

Matter of fact, I thought it really was two dogs at first!  Hope you like it too.  And if I don’t see you at the library before – Happy Halloween to everyone!

There Was a Terrible Accident at Our Halloween Village!!!!!

(Well, it you might not consider to be that bad if you like cats.)

You see, one of the villagers decided they wanted to be a tiny bit taller, but the potion they brewed was too hot to drink so they put it aside to cool while they went out to buy cat food.  Unfortunately, their cat wasn’t picky about what it ate and lapped up almost the entire bowl of potion, knocking what little remained onto a pumpkin growing just below the window.  Now there is a monstrously large cat, and pumpkin, that the villagers would like have removed from the village before it gets too hungry.

To help them out, the Library is going to raffle off the cat, pumpkin included.  Next time you’re in the Library just fill in one of the tickets with your name and phone number.  The drawing will be on October 26th so the cat, and pumpkin, will have a new home before Halloween.

The 12 top costumes from the Library Halloween program were:

Ice Princess - Shelby Cornwall

Fairy - Jackie Kozecar

Beeker from the Muppets - Austin Aucoin
