Notes From Nubi: Now I'm A COW!

Am I glad this month is almost over!  Since this is National Dairy Month, mom bought me a cow costume to wear at the last Tail Time of the month.  I mean, if it had fit that would have been one thing, but mom can never seem to buy the right size.  Course, I’d rather have it be too big than too small, but it’s still embarrassing when my library friends see me all fussed up like that.

Thankfully, mom doesn’t dress me up too often, and then it’s only because she’s taking me to the library for a program or some holiday.  Why do moms insist on embarrassing their kids like that?

The lucky part is she left her camera at home so NO PICTURES!  When we get home I’ll have to make sure she can’t find it to take some then.

Civic Group Looks to Expand into North Judson

By: Mary Perren, WKVI
Published: June 10th, 2013

Members of the Winamac Lions Club want to help organize a new chapter in North Judson. Connie Roe says Lions Club International wants to do an accelerated start-up to get a club going. She says the Winamac club is willing to serve as their sponsor.  “San Pierre had a Lions Club, but they folded last year. There is no surrounding Lions Club with the exception of maybe Bass Lake or Winamac that would even help support the area, so I think it’s important that this area have a club to help support those needs that aren’t being met by other organizations,” said Roe.

Roe says it takes at least 20 members to form and sustain a club. She says members give back to their communities in many ways.

“Some of the things that Lions Clubs have done in their communities are helping support band, athletics, they can do a kid sight screening, they can buy eyeglasses for needy families, coats, get involved in their schools, any other service project that might be going on, provide scholarships for graduating seniors – if you can think it, you can do it,” she said.

The North Judson Town Council gave Roe and other Winamac Lions Club members their blessing to approach members of the community about becoming members of the service organization. In addition to being sponsored by the Winamac Lions Club, the new organization will have “Guiding Lions” from another chapter to help the new officers learn their duties and file their necessary paperwork.

Lion's Club International will be meeting at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library on June 24, 2013 at 6 p.m.  We hope to see you here.

Mission Accomplished: Accelerated Reader & Lexile Done

It's finished! I've spent a good part of the past year checking our young adult, juvenile and children's fiction and non-fiction to see if they were listed in the Accelerated Reader program or Lexile program. As of today, all those books on our shelves have been checked and future books will be checked as they are being processed.

Whew, I think this has earned me a bowl of ice cream from Piggies n' Cream when I get off work Saturday!

Thanks for Your Help, Frank!

Frank Amidei has been a faithful Mint Festival Board Member for many years.  Frank has especially been a huge help with our Bingo games.  He was always ready to organize the games and keep it going.

Frank has retired from the Mint Festival Board, but we have a feeling we will still see him around on Father’s Day Weekend!  We want to thank Frank for all of his years of service and dedication to our Mint Festival.

Frank, you will be missed!

2013 Mint Festival Grand Marshal

Congratulations to Edward Lambert, Jr. who is our 2013 Mint Festival Parade Grand Marshal!  Ed and his brother, Dave & Chris, are the third generation of Lambert mint festivals.  Ed’s grandfather was George Lambert who began the mint farming operation in the 1930’s along with Fred Kellerman.  Edward Lambert, Sr. took over the mint farming from George and Fred in 1959, and Ed, Sr. is now retired.

The Lamberts farm 400 acres of mint, and last year, they partnered with Kemin Industries, Inc. to provide mint for Kemin’s specialized uses of the product.  Ed, along with Dave, Chris, and their wives Lynn, Kathy, and Robyn, are also very active in church and community.

Thank you to Ed Lambert, Jr. for all of your contributions to our North Judson community!

Notes From Nubi - Summer Reading Has Begun

How did summer get here so fast?  It seems as if the kids were in school just the other day and now they are coming into the library for our Summer Reading Program.

Of course, we have started the program earlier this year.  Usually the program starts closer to July, but this year it runs from June 3rd to July 26th, if you’re counting that’s eight weeks instead of the usual six.  That also means that there will be more weekly story and craft sessions for the kids to attend, which means more neat stuff to make and take home.

This year a student from Purdue University, North Central, will be running the program.  Her name is Stephanie Sierzputowski and she seems like a fun person.  Each week Stephanie will read a book that fits the theme – Dig Into Reading – and then there will be a craft, and the occasional tasty treat.  (I wonder if the treats will be pet friendly?  Maybe I should attend and find out.)

Anyway, each child is expected to either read with a family member or, if they are too young to read, have a family member read to them for at least an hour a week.  So older children can read to their younger brothers & sisters, nieces & nephews, or cousins and the time will count for everyone.

And at the end of the program there is a special treat.  Everyone who has done at least 8 hours of reading and has attended at least 4 story/craft meetings will get a FREE TICKET for a Train Ride on July 26th.  Each child will have to be accompanied by an adult and addition family members can also go along for the ride at a reduced rate – but everyone will have to sign up in advance.  After the train ride there will be homemade corn dogs, fruit, chips, carrots and a drink waiting back at the station.

Wish mom would read to me and I could go, but mom said dogs aren’t allowed on the train.  But maybe she’ll take me to meet everyone after the train ride.  And if you just happened to drop any morsels of food I’d be more than willing to clean up!
