In order to give community members a chance to stock up on gifts and goodies in time for Christmas, Mint Festival organizers are trying something new this year with a special Holiday Mint Fair.
It will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the gymnasium of the St. Peter’s Lutheran School in North Judson.
Mint Fest Rep Donna Henry said that in addition to a booth that they’ll have set up with mint oil and cook books, there will be a variety of other vendors, with nearly 30 signed up to participate.
The Starke County Fostering a Recovery Mentality program will be one of them, selling unique pieces of furniture and holiday decorations created by trustees in the F.A.R.M. Program.
Henry said there is one vendor who will be selling smoked meats and others who have cookies and other treats. She added there will also be a lot of different kinds of crafts to choose from as well as a booth with specialty teas and another that sells items for dogs.
She noted that they will also have concessions for sale, with potato soup and vegetable soup available in addition to beverages and snack items.
Vendors will be able to set up tonight from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

NJ Officials Invited to Participate in Mint Fest Opening Ceremony

The 43rd annual North Judson Mint Festival will kick-off at the end of this week.
Mint Fest Committee President Donna Henry took some time at the most recent North Judson Town Council meeting to invite officials to play a role in the festivities.
Henry shared, “I would like to invite you all to be at our opening ceremony at 5 o’clock on Friday, June 14th.”
The opening ceremony will be held in Norwayne Field.
The Taste of North Judson will begin immediately afterward and will run for the remainder of the evening, as well as all day on Saturday and Sunday.
The carnival that will be set up in the Catholic Church parking lot will follow the same schedule.
The theme of this year’s Festival is “Celebrating Our Home Town Champions.”
The 2018 State Champion NJ-SP High School Volleyball Team and their coaches will serve as the Grand Marshals. They will participate in the opening ceremony and take part in Sunday’s parade.
Other parade participants will include representatives of local businesses and organizations as well as the winners of the Mint Festival Pageants.

The theme of the 2019 North Judson Mint Fest has been decided.
According to information provided by Event Organizer Donna Henry this year’s theme will be “Celebrating Our Local Champions” and the State Championship Volleyball Team and Coaches will serve as the Grand Marshals for the parade.
Festival representatives said they want to honor the girls’ volleyball team for being the first and only athletic team to win a state championship.
They’re also encouraging other local champions to join in the celebration by having an entry in the parade. They noted that the entries can come from a number of categories including, but not limited to, those who have accomplishments in the public sector, athletics, academics or in band and choir.

The Registration Deadline for North Judson Mint Fest Pageants is This Thursday

Thursday, May 10th is the final day to register for the North Judson Mint Festival pageants! Sign-ups will be held at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Starke County students ages 5 through 19 are permitted to sign up for the Mint Festival Queen and King Pageant. The registration fee is $20 and a fundraiser is required.
The county’s youngsters, ranging from newborns up to 4-year-olds, can register for the Mint Darlings Pageant, where a fundraiser is also required.
On Saturday, June 9th, The Mint Darlings Pageant will be held at 11 a.m. and the Queen and King Pageant is scheduled for 6 p.m. Both pageants will be held at Knox Middle School Cafetorium.

Mint Festival Organizers Working Around Unsafe Lane Street Building

The North Judson Mint Festival is set to get underway this evening, in spite of an unsafe building on Lane Street. “We knew that this was a possibility and so we had a plan B and we’re working with plan B and it’s going fine,” says Mint Festival President Donna Henry.
The structure at 205 and 207 Lane Street is believed to be in danger of collapse. Part of it already fell in on itself last month. Town officials had hoped to have it torn down before the Mint Festival begins, but the town council last week rejected the only demolition quote.
However, Henry says the town has taken steps to keep festival-goers safe this weekend. “The town has put up temporary fencing around it, so that it’s completely blocked off,” she says. “The festival-goers will still be able to walk along the one sidewalk along that area, but it’ll be protected from the building.”
Henry says some of the festival’s vendors will be relocated, as a result. “We’re going to start our vendor spots at that second half of that block of Lane Street,” she explains. “Our vendor committee has worked really hard to make sure that we have enough space for all of our vendors, and as far as I know, all of our spaces are filled. They have done a great job, and I want to thank Paige and Bob [Barnett] for that.”
Henry reminds visitors that pets, bicycles, and unauthorized golf carts will not be allowed into the Mint Festival. Otherwise, she says organizers are looking forward to a successful event. “We have some new attractions this year, and we have some enhancements for our 5K run,” she says. “We have some new and different bands for our music arena. We are just looking forward to a great Mint Festival weekend, and we are praying that Mother Nature cooperates.”

Mint Festival Festivities Continue in North Judson
The 40th annual Mint Festival is in full swing in North Judson. In addition to food and vendor booths on Lane Street and at Norwayne Field, activities abound today. Highlights include the car show in the United Methodist Church parking lot, the FFA Tractor Show at the elementary school, waterball fights at the old fire station on Main Street and the pet parade at the town park. The Cooking with Mint contest will take place at the Girl Scout Cabin.
The Town of North Judson is also celebrating its sesquicentennial, with an ice cream social from 1 until 3 p.m. at the town hall.
Musical performances from the N.J. Pickers, Jim Post, Justified and Half Track will be featured throughout the day and into the evening hours at Norwayne Field. Other activities include puppet and magic shows, the frog jumping contest, a corn hole tournament and horse and carriage rides beginning at noon and continuing through at least dusk. They will leave from Adair Street across from the library.
WKVI’s Lenny Dessauer and Mary Perren will be tasting their way through the festival today, and the WKVI car and staff will be in tomorrow’s parade. It starts at 3 p.m. at the high school and will come down State Road 10 through town.
Tomorrow’s highlights include an outdoor worship service at St. Peter Lutheran Church and a Heartland Christian Worship Service. North Judson American Legion Post 92 will conduct a flag burning ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday musical performances include Get Lucky and Junior and the Igniters.

Ice Cream Social Planned to Celebrate North Judson History During Mint Festival
Plans are being finalized for this weekend’s North Judson Mint Festival.
Festival organizer Donna Henry gave the town council an update last week. “For the Mint Festival Committee, everything is pretty much ready for the festival to go on, and we’re looking forward to a very pleasant weekend for our community,” she said.
The festival takes on an added significance this year, since it’s North Judson’s sesquicentennial. To mark the occasion, the town is planning an ice cream social to take place during this weekend’s festivities. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins says it will be held Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 in the Town Hall, “Basically, we’ll use this as a cooling station. If anybody wants to stop by, we’ll celebrate North Judson’s sesquicentennial, and we’re going to do an old-fashioned ice cream social. We’ll have some pictures and memorabilia in here. They can tell stories.”
Town council member Jane Ellen Felchuk says several pictures from the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library’s collection will be on display, and residents will have the chance to help identify some of the people in the photographs.
The Mint Festival takes place Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19.
