The Starke County Highway Department hopes to replace close to 60 culverts this year. That’s almost double the goal of 30 set by Superintendent Rik Ritzler for the year. He says the department has a good crew that is able to do the work quickly, and he’s looking to train more.
Ritzler told the county commissioners Monday they’re on pace to install 40 culverts by June when road improvements will get under way for the season. He says they may be able to replace a total of 59 culverts this year.
Since 2013 the Starke County Highway Department has replaced 100 culverts across the county. Ritzler says if the county continues the inspection and replacement program it will realize a savings in the long run. Starke County has 704 roadway culverts and 57 local bridges.
Right now crews are working in the northeast portion of the county. Ritzler says any culvert replacements in other areas will likely wait until the fall. Call the Starke County Highway Department at 574-772-3011 with any questions or to report any culverts in need of replacement.
