After-school programs offered by the Starke County Youth Club at six sites across the county are designed with curriculum in mind. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says they serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade at Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis. She notes the homework centers are mapped out by grade level. Students receive very specific help with their homework assignments. Szakonyi adds the Starke County Youth Club tracks the curriculum for each grade level in order to supplement lessons in math, science and other areas. She says the Starke County Youth Club’s after-school programs find innovative ways to engage the students in their studies. For instance, if students are learning about fractions, a club activity may use graduated cylinders to reinforce the lessons.
Szakonyi says the Starke County Youth Club wants to give students the best step forward into the next grade and for the rest of their lives.
The Starke County Youth Club will be taking over the WKVI airwaves Friday, May 5, 2017 for their annual radiothon. Learn more about their after-school and summer programs by visiting their website, www.thescyc.org.
