Joan Haugh Named Schricker Award Winner

Joan Haugh
The 2013 Henry F. Schricker Award winner was recently announced.
Joan Haugh was selected as this year’s winner. Haugh has been the director of Community Services of Starke County for 30 years and has been involved in many volunteer projects in the county. Some of those volunteer efforts include working with the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Habitat for Humanity, Moving Starke County Forward, Starke United and the Salvation Army. She is active in her church, the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, and has previously taught CCD classes there as well as marriage preparation classes.
She sees the lack of a homeless shelter in Starke County as a major void in the area. A recent effort to identify those who are homeless resulted in 81 people in desperate need. She worries about these individuals, especially those exposed to the winter elements.
Haugh has the qualities of a true Henry F. Schricker Award winner. The former governor of Indiana and resident of Starke County used as his motto, “service before self,” and Haugh has proved to be a member of the community to look up to in this regard. Her late husband, Mike, was also a Schricker award winner in 2005.
Joan Haugh will be honored during the Starke County Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet on Jan. 16 at the Bass Lake Community Center. To get your ticket, call the Starke County Chamber office at (574) 772-5548.
Ancilla College Offers LPN to RN Bridge Program

Ron May, president of the college, said the class begins in the summer and offers a chance for those with a licensed practical nursing license to take the next step and earn their registered nursing license.
“It’s a way of moving from the licensed practical nursing licensure that people have in the state of Indiana into the registered nurse classification and it gives you an opportunity to have a little bit better salary and those kind of things. It’s a great program to enable young people, or perhaps not so young people, to move from one level of certification in the healthcare business to another and advance their career,” May said.
May said there are 20 seats in the class, and even though it begins in the summer, interested students should get in contact with the admissions office by calling 1-800-ANCILLA and get the process started to snag one of the seats. He said the sooner you call, the better, because there may be prerequisite classes available to prepare for the LPN to RN bridge program.
However, those with LPN licenses who are already employed may find it a challenge to balance their time between their full-time employment and the course. May said it is a demanding program that can dominate your time if you’re not careful.
“Those of you who just experienced care with healthcare know you want the best people you can get there, and you want people who know what they’re doing taking care of you. And so it is a demanding program; they can do that, but they need to understand going in that being a student in this LPN to RN bridge is like another full-time job,” May said.

Ancilla College Offers Free College Course for New Students

Ancilla College is offering a free college course to first-time students to help kick-start a college career. Todd Zeltwanger, executive director of institutional advancement at the college, told WKVI that a number of students have started their college career through the We Believe In You program.
The program offers a chance for new students to give college a shot and get readjusted to a life of education.
“There’s a number of things a person can try, anywhere from a business course or education, science, chemistry, just a general studies type of path, just to kind of get their feet wet in it. As far as being intimidated, we have a number of non-traditional age students that are intermixed with our classes now, and the class sizes are small, so there shouldn’t be any factor of fear,” Zeltwanger said.
As part of the “We Believe in You” program, the college is offering adult learners who are 21 years and older and who have never attended college the chance to take a class with up to three credit hours at no cost.
All students in the program will have an academic adviser to assist them with every aspect of attending college for the first time. Help with registration, filing a financial aid application, choosing education opportunities and more will be given to those students.
“I think one of the things that we try to do at Ancilla, especially with these students, is there are all kinds of other support services available. The faculty, and the staff that we have to do the counseling and just to sit down and talk with the people about what are we interested in, what are we thinking about, and helping them get past that initial fear,” said Zeltwanger.

WKVI Country Christmas Contest Winners Announced

Published: December 24th, 2013This weekend, the WKVI crew loaded up into their vehicles and traveled across rural Starke County as they visited the homes of participants in the first-ever WKVI Country Christmas Contest. More than a dozen people signed up to have their homes judged by WKVI staff in the hopes of winning the grand prize of $100.
The third place prize went to Danny and Debbie Woodward of North Judson for their display at 4700 W. State Road 10, earning them $25.
In second place was Eldonna Risner of 9023 E. State Road 8 in Knox, earning $50.
The first place winner and grand prize recipient for the first WKVI Christmas Contest was David Roberts for his stunning display at 1105 S. 1100 E. in Culver.
Several people from the radio station traveled to each home on the contest list Saturday night before making their decision.

cousins to the North Pole dwarfs who rode in Santa’s sleigh. (Someone should write a song or poem about
them so it’s easier to remember their names!)
The Three Little Dwarfs who went

“The children were nestled, all snug in their beds, while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.” Sounds so nice and sweet, but what the heck are sugarplums? Mom thinks they are candies like gumdrops. When I did a search on Google it came up with a recipe for a cookie, some chocolate covered marshmallows, soaps, diapers, nail polish and even Ale (whatever that is).
I also found a link to an article written by a person who did a lot of research about them. She said that they are “a sweet made of sugar hardened around a central seed or kernel in successive layers using a process called ‘panning.’” Just think of jawbreakers or Jordan almonds.

Some people might consider this a trick question. In Polar Express Tom Hanks provided the motion-capture and the voices for 1) the father, 2) the conductor, 3) the hobo, 4) Scrooge, and 5) Santa Claus. He also, along with Josh Hutcherson, provided the motion-capture for the hero boy while the boy’s voice was provided by Daryl Sabara. Whew, that makes 5 characters for whom he provided both voice and animation plus 1 for whom he did part of the animation!
While the children in Polar Express took a train to the North Pole and saw Santa Claus, most children spend Christmas Eve nestled, all snug in their beds while visions of what treat dance through their heads?
I know there will be visions of doggie treats dancing in my head when I fall asleep on Christmas Eve.

In 1953 it was made into a short stop animation feature which was a staple on WGN for many years.
And since the topic of TV came up, do you know which star of a very popular current comedy series appeared in both the 1989 Christmas movies “Prancer” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?"

Well, they’re back. I thought we had a whole bunch of them last year, but the UPS guy was in and dropped off 400 of those 2014 Indiana Festival Guides! He must be really strong!
Hey, how about this for an idea? Pick up one of the 2014 Indiana Festival Guides from the library and put marks by all the festivals that interest you. Then you can give it to anyone who wants to know what you want for your birthday, anniversary, Mother’s/Father’s Day, vacation or just because.
Now don’t you worry if you can’t make it in to the library to pick up a copy right now, after all it is almost Christmas. Mom said that once the State makes changes to their website you can download the 2014 Indiana Travel Guide and the 2014 Indiana Festival Guide to your computer from Visit Indiana. She said that they have over 50 other guides and brochures – broken down by North, West, East, Central, South Central, and South - if you're looking for something special to do in Indiana.

12/14 & 15/2013 Another Weekend Full of Christmas Events
December 14th
Make plans to attend a Christmas Bazaar at the Knox Moose
Lodge on Saturday, December 14th from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CDT.
Breakfast and lunch items will be available, along with bake
sale items and vendors selling things. This will be a great time to get those
stocking stuffers and last minute gift items in time for Christmas!
Backstage Studio of Dance will be having a Bake Sale on
Saturday, Dec. 14th at Mark Baileys from 8:30 til 3:30.
The money raised will help send the girls to Indianapolis
for their dance competition in the new year.

This award is given to a Starke County resident who has exemplified the former governor’s attitude of “service before self.”
The Starke County Chamber of Commerce will review all submissions and a committee of former award winners will select this year’s recipient. You may nominate a candidate for consideration for this award by submitting a resume along with a cover letter outlining the qualities and deeds of your nominee. The resume should include the person’s voluntary contributions and benefits to Starke County.
The information should be submitted to the Starke County Chamber of Commerce no later than Friday, Dec. 13. Mail entries to the Starke County Chamber, P.O. Box 5, Knox, IN 46534. Entries may also be delivered to the chamber office in the Gateway Depot at 400 N. Heaton St. in Knox.
The winner of the Henry F. Schricker award will be announced by Dec. 26 and that person will be honored at the chamber’s Annual Henry F. Well, they say you learn something new every day, or if you don’t you should. While looking for trivia topics I learned that in 1882, Edward H. Johnson had the first Christmas tree lit by the use of electricity. Christmas lights were mass produced around 1890 and by 1900 department stores started using the new Christmas lights for their Christmas displays. By the way, Edward H. Johnson was one of Thomas Edison's muckers, an inventor who worked under the direction of Edison. Johnson eventually became vice-president of Edison's electric company.

WKVI Hosts First Country Christmas Contest

Get those Christmas lights and other holiday decorations hung up; WKVI is hosting the first-ever WKVI Country Christmas Contest, giving residents of rural Starke County the chance to participate in a tradition often left to the city folk. WKVI General Manager Jerry Curtis said yesterday that the idea came about as the result of a post on WKVI’s Facebook page.
“It happened this morning in response to a posting on Facebook. Someone wrote in, ‘Well, how about something for some of us out in the country?’ And in about five minutes, the idea came up and we put it all together and it was a result of that Facebook posting that was on Facebook this morning,” Curtis said.
To participate, you must be outside city limits in Starke County and have a decorated home. The first place winner will receive $100, second place $50 and third place $25.
Curtis said there’s no particular “look” the judges will be seeking, so get to decorating and enter your home in the Country Christmas Contest.
“We are looking for what we think is the best looking house or yard or display. What that is, exactly, I don’t know sitting right here, but I think I’ll know it when I see it,” Curtis said.
To sign up, call (574) 772-6241 and submit your name and address. On Dec. 21 beginning at 6 p.m., WKVI station members will visit your home and judge your decorations.

12/7/2013 Iris-Elm Garden Club to Feature Mid-19th Century Christmas Arrangements

Published: December 4th, 2013Pulaski County’s Winter Wonderland is this Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET in the downtown area.
Among the many deals the downtown merchants will have, along with cookies and cider and caroling at the courthouse, the Iris-Elm Christmas Arrangements Show will be in the Historic Railroad Freight Depot on West Main Street in Winamac. The elegantly decorated arrangements will be out for viewing throughout the day at no charge for you to enjoy. The show will also feature a bake sale/gift bazaar table.
The theme will be “1862 Christmas” and the garden club members will assemble holiday arrangements that follow the mid-19th Century era.
The Iris-Elm Garden Club has been participating in this holiday feature since 1958. It is a chance for the members to show off their abilities and inspire others to create unique holiday arrangements for display in their own homes.
The garden club itself will be celebrating its 83rd anniversary this year and is said to be one of the oldest garden clubs in the state.

After-School Program In North Judson Offers Art Activities for Students

Published: December 3rd, 2013Students in the eighth grade all the way through college are invited to take part in a community event every Tuesday in North Judson.
If you enjoy art, this will be the ticket for you. Starting today, a free after-school program will feature art, literature, music, poetry and some other skill building event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. CT every Tuesday at The Studio, 424 Lane Street in North Judson.
Hannah Minix told WKVI that this is an opportunity for students to develop a skill in some aspect of art, whether it be drawing, writing musical lyrics or discussing literature. She noted that it’s a safe place to go after school and get away from the stresses of school.

The Tree Lighting in North Judson will be on Friday evening, December 6, at 6 PM. At 5:45 PM, the Christmas Parade will begin at Lane and Sycamore streets, proceed down Lane to Main, and to Norwayne Field, where Santa will help light the trees. The North Judson-San Pierre High School Band will be in the parade, and the NJ-SP Choir will sing at the lighting. Parade participants should line up on Luken Street near Sycamore at 5:30. Following the tree lighting, join Santa at the Community Building (old firehouse) for cookies and hot chocolate, where Back Stage Studio of Dance will also perform. The Christmas spirit arrives in North Judson in a big way December 6.

The annual community Christmas Cantata at the Knox United Methodist Church on Sunday, Dec. 8 with performances at 2 p.m. and at 6 p.m. CT.
