Efforts to beautify North Judson’s Pioneer Cemetery continue to move ahead. Dr. Dennis Dalphond has been leading a group of volunteers in restoring the cemetery’s stone terrace.

He told the North Judson Town Council Monday it will take another couple years to finish the project, according to Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins. She says Dalphond is looking for more volunteers to help with the effort. Volunteers work on the cemetery each Saturday.

5/12/2017 Help Needed For Pioneer Cemetery Renovation Project

From Dennis Dalphond's Facebook page:
"This Friday May 12th between 4 and 6 PM
So here is the deal.
The 4th and final footing is ready to be poured. The footing is 100 feet long, 1 foot wide and 10 inches deep. It will take 4 yards of concrete to fill. Fortunately, this time we will have a cement truck delivering it for us. Josh Binkley and Tazco Readymix (from Westville) are going out of their way (with pricing and delivery time) to help us out. Saturday morning delivery is not possible so the truck will be there Friday afternoon between 4 and 6 pm.. While we will not have to mix the concrete ourselves, we may have to move it around in 5 gallon buckets from the chute to the form. Once the concrete is in place we will need to place boulders (some of them quite heavy) onto the concrete. If we get enough hands out to help it should take 1 or 2 hours to get the job done.
Such fun!!
A Friday evening to remember.
Please show up and lend a hand. I will not know the exact time that the truck will arrive until Friday afternoon and will post the ETA when it is available."

Last year the terraced area across from the North Judson United Methodist Church was not in the best conditon. In the over fifty years that I have walked past it I have seen it get worse and worse. Dr. Dennis Dalphond has made it his goal to revamp and create an area more in keeping with Norwayne Field, which lies on the other side of Pioneer Cemetery. For over a year he and other volunteers have worked to improve the area and keep the intent of the people who originally did the landscaping there. The work is coming close to completion and with your help it could be finished by the 2017 Mint Festival. So if you have the time he could sure use some hands this Friday, May 12th, between 4 and 6 p.m. to help finish the final footing. It already looks more attractive than it did last year. (By the way, these photos were "stolen" from Dr. Dalphond's Facebook page.)

Work Begins on North Judson Wastewater Plan

Posted on July 23, 2016

The Town of North Judson is beginning the process of updating plans for the town’s wastewater facilities.

Commonwealth Engineers had approached the town council earlier this year with a proposal to update the long-term control plan. This week, Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann told the council that the planning process is now underway. “Commonwealth Engineers and I met last week to start the wastewater study,” he said. “It was kind of the kickoff meeting. We went over the wastewater plant, went out to the pond, discussed the various issues that we’ve been having, so they know what to be looking into.”

Representatives with the firm have said the updated plan would help the town make decisions about future wastewater improvements and anticipate needs that may arise. The new plan’s expected to cost $37,500, but a grant U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office is expected to cover 75 percent of that.

During Monday’s meeting, Horstmann also presented a purchase order for the necessary equipment to restore water service at Pioneer Cemetery, at a cost of just under $1,000. The council previously decided to install one new water tap rather than repair the existing system, in an effort to minimize the risk of leaks causing damage to the cemetery.

In other business, town officials issued a reminder that contractors doing work within the Town of North Judson are required to have a permit on file with the clerk-treasurer. Residents who are unsure if a contractor has a proper permit are asked to double check with the town before doing business. Likewise, if residents experience a major issue with a contractor, they should file a complaint with the town, to include in their records.

North Judson to Restore Water at Pioneer Cemetery

Posted on July 8, 2016
Author Michael Gallenberger, WKVI

Efforts to restore North Judson’s Pioneer Cemetery are getting a boost from the town. Dr. Dennis Dalphond has been leading efforts to beautify the cemetery, but a lack of water at the cemetery has made landscaping work difficult.

While Pioneer Cemetery has a water system, it hasn’t been used in decades and needs significant repairs, according to Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann. “We would have to go through the entire cemetery and replace all the broken and bent standpipes,” he says. “The old meter would have to be changed out with a new one. There’s a small shutoff valve prior to the meter, but there is nothing prior to the pit.”

Horstmann told the town council Tuesday that while a shutoff valve could be installed, there’s no indication of how many leaks there may be in the system. He said leaks may lead to sinkholes, collapsed headstones and flooded graves.

Instead of repairing the existing system, Horstmann recommended a different solution, “The second option would be to dig up the 10-inch main in the driveway at the top of the hill. We could put a tapping saddle on it, tap the line, and run tubing over to a new meter pit, out of the way of the driveway, and from the meter pit run it over to a yard hydrant, and just have one yard hydrant for the whole cemetery.” He says it would be placed in a central location by the memorial garden.

Even though the plan would only provide one water source for the cemetery, it’s an improvement over the current situation. Right now, volunteers have to run hoses from the Methodist Church across the street.

The town council voted Tuesday to allow Horstmann to proceed with his recommended plan.

Bluejay Football Team, Volunteers Rebuild Pioneer Cemetery Terrace

Group photoMembers of the North Judson-San Pierre High School football team got a workout outside of football practice over the weekend, and their efforts will be part of a community legacy. Varsity Head Coach Ted White and his team helped Dr. Dennis Dalphond and other volunteers mix and pour cement for the terraces at the north edge of Pioneer Cemetery, across from North Judson United Methodist Church. White quipped it might be better exercise than the weight lifting the players are doing in the off season.“We do kind of do drills like this. We fill buckets up with sand and we start doing that about midway through. So this is giving us a little advantage. It’s good for the kids, it’s great for the community,” White said.
Dalphond approached him and asked if the football team would be willing to help out with some concrete work. White laughed and said he didn’t realize that also meant mixing the concrete by hand. He says taking part in community projects like the cemetery rehabilitation helps his team build camaraderie.
“If you can work together other than football, you can do a lot of things together. Same when we eat together, we go out together, things like that. And I want them to be friends and workmates and stuff like that, so it does count a lot. It’s awesome for the community.”
The terrace restoration is part of the ongoing Pioneer Cemetery rehabilitation project. The next scheduled work day is Sunday, June 12. Dalphond encourages volunteers to bring five-gallon buckets to mix and haul more concrete. Contact him at home, 574-896-3339, for more information.
Right now volunteers are doing the work, but Dalphond has also set up a fund through the Northern Indiana Community Foundation to offset costs of things like an eventual irrigation system. What Are YOU Doing May 5th?

While reading the May 5th edition of the Market these few lines about the work being done on Pioneer Cemetery impressed themselves on my brain.

“The Ladies….and I showed up at the cemetery at the appointed time and spent 2 hours grunting, groaning and laughing as we moved earth and stone to firm up retaining walls.  We want this to be a nice display for everyone by next spring.”
“That being the case – if any of you folks would like to help out – please, please show up Sunday May 15th at 1 p.m.  Or call 896-3339 to contribute prior to the above date.  This project “WILL” be completed but with 3 Women and 1 Canadian guy (all of us north of 6 decades) – well it will take a while.”

So if you’re a student needing to do some community service, belong to a group (ie: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Youth Church group, 4-H, FFA, etc.) interested in serving the community, or maybe you and a few friends are just looking for something creative to do, why not show up on May 15th and lend a hand.  Your community will really appreciate you (and so will the Ladies and that Canadian guy).
