The Indiana Department of Transportation is teaming up with volunteers to clean up the state’s roadsides in the agency’s annual Trash Bash event.
The event aims at clearing trash and debris from the roadsides of busy highways and interstates to improve the environment and lessen litter eyesores.
According to INDOT, an average of $4.3 million is invested to pick up litter on state highways each year. The effort includes 60,000 labor hours.
This year’s Trash Bash is set to begin Friday, April 13 and end Sunday, April 15. INDOT encourages residents, organizations, businesses and active Adopt-a-Highway groups to help clear garbage from the roadsides along on two-lane roads with lower traffic volume. INDOT staff members will focus on litter collection on roads with a higher traffic volume during the same time period.
To participate, contact INDOT customer service at 1-855-463-6848 or email indot@indot.in.gov. Participants will be connected with a Trash Bash coordinator to receive an assigned cleanup location, a briefing on roadside safety, mandatory safety vests to be worn at all times, and trash bags.
All trash bagged by volunteers will be collected and disposed of by INDOT crews.
Motorists are reminded to look out for work crews and volunteers along Indiana highways during this event April 13-15.
