Spring Increases Flooding Risk says State Insurance Agency

If April showers bring May flowers, they are also capable of bringing floods to the local area.
Spring begins on Sunday and continues through June 20th. In response, the Indiana Department of Insurance is reminding Hoosiers to prepare for spring flooding by obtaining flood insurance. Last year’s heavy June rainfall damaged homes across the Hoosier state as a result of rising rivers, lakes, storm sewers, and other overflows.
According to the Indiana Department of Insurance, many homeowners’ insurance policies do not include flood coverage. The state says just because it may not be required by your mortgage service provider, does not mean that landowners are immune from the exposure localized flooding may bring.
Information provided by the Indiana Department of Insurance says planning ahead is important in the preparation process. It may take some time for flood insurance policies to go into effect according to many policy experts, but taking action before potential flooding events can reduce the risk and cost to the homeowner.
