When proposed plans for the potential renovation project at the North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School were discussed in a work session last week, a possible way to avoid disrupting instruction was presented.
Fanning Howey Chief Executive Officer Bill Payne provided information about the idea to school officials and meeting attendees.
He explained, “We could take a couple of grade levels and temporarily move them into the middle school building and phase and isolate construction.
Payne expanded upon that, noting that having the extra available space at the Middle School will keep crews from hitting a common obstacle that they often face with long-term renovations.
He noted, “That’s usually the problem when we’re renovating existing buildings, it always takes more than simply a summer so the ability to move those students and staff temporarily to the middle school while we’re renovating sections of the building will really help with keeping construction away from school operations.”
No official decisions were made during the work session and ideas presented were simply hypothetical scenarios that Fanning Howey representatives came up with after conducting their initial feasibility study. More detailed plans will be presented in the future.

North Judson Police Department is Wrapping Up Station Renovations

Renovations at the North Judson Police Department are nearing completion, according to Town Marshal Kelly Fisher.
“The remodel has been long and painful but we’ve gotten through it and there’s a major difference. We’re happy that’s pretty close to being done. We’ll have an open house once we get the dust cleaned up and so forth.”
Fisher said there isn’t an exact date or time for the open house quite yet but she suggested holding it prior to a town council meeting. She said it could possibly be before the one scheduled for June 4th.
Marshal Fisher added that the work to convert the boardroom into a training center is completely finished. She said the Valpo University Police Department will be leading an active shooter training session there on May 31st.

N.J.-S.P. School Board Moves Toward Bond Issue for Renovation Project

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is moving ahead with a $5.5 million renovation project.
To pay for the upgrades, the corporation will be issuing bonds. As part of that process, the school board met in special session Tuesday to approve several resolutions, as required by law. “Basically, what we have adopted is the resolution to enter into a project that’s over a million dollars,” explains Superintendent Annette Zupin. “We have entered into a lease agreement for the $5.6 million over the seven-year period, and then also a resolution to reimburse for expenditures.”
That reimbursement resolution would allow the corporation to address some of the items on the project list before the bonds are issued, should an emergency arise. The corporation would then be reimbursed once the bonds are sold.
The bulk of the work would take place at the high school building. It would get new carpeting, LED lighting, and roof repairs.
Zupin says no comments were offered during a public hearing Tuesday, but the project architect, financial adviser, and bond counsel were on hand to review the project. Zupin stresses the the work will not affect property tax rates, as it can be done within the corporation’s existing debt service.
For now, residents have 30 days to file a petition objecting to the plan. After that, Zupin says the corporation can begin working on the financial documents.
