Applications Available for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

As the winter season approaches and temperatures continue to drop, people will begin turning up the heat in their homes. If you and your family are worried that you cannot afford the additional cost this season, there is a chance you could qualify for help through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
LIHEAP is funded through the U.S Department of Health and Human Services to help low income families avoid losing utilities this winter.
The program began earlier this month and will officially conclude in May of 2018. Beginning on December 1st, clients with active service who have approved Energy Assistance Program applications are protected from disconnection through March 15th.
To pick up an application or to get more information about the program contact your local service providers. Specific addresses and phone numbers can be found below.
Before you go in, be sure to have a copy of the social security cards of every resident in your home and copies of driver’s licenses from all members over 18-years-old. Individuals will also need proof of residence, meaning a signed lease or deed, proof of income and copies of recent utility bills. If you have already received a disconnect notice, contact your local agency immediately.

Starke County Community Foundation Honors Volunteers

Starke County Community Services recognized several local residents and organizations during a volunteer recognition luncheon Thursday.
During the event, Community Services staff member Rhonda Overmyer announced the winner of the Community Services Senior Volunteer of the Year Award. “Today, we come together as one voice to honor and lift up this incredible woman,” Overmyer said, “a woman who has worked her whole life to tend to the needs of others, a woman committed to treating those in need with dignity and respect, a woman who possesses the ability to show brotherly and sisterly love to the unlovable, a woman whose name is Doloras Dan.” Following her retirement from Smith Farm Store in 2008, Dan has been involved with many local organizations, including Starke County Community Services since 2011.
Meanwhile, Community Services Board Secretary Mark Rippy honored Lori Dunning with the Community Volunteer of the Year Award. “Starke County is blessed to have Lori Dunning,” Rippy said. “Lori’s a seasoned volunteer at Community Services of Starke County and is the program coordinator for Hope for the Holidays Christmas program. Originally initiated by former executive director Joan Haugh, Lori has taken the reins and works full-time each year to help ensure the less fortunate children of Starke County are provided for on Christmas morning.”
The program typically serves over 500 people a year.

North Judson to Pursue Larger Grant for Community Center Project

Some additional grant funding may be available to help build a community center in North Judson. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins told the town council Monday that the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs has increased the maximum amount of grant funding to $500,000 from $400,000 for the fall application round.
However, that would mean a greater commitment from North Judson and Wayne Township. “We’re working with KIRPC to just continue to use our amount that we are purchasing the land for, as well as the appraisal amount, to make our grant match because that would be $50,000 instead of $40,000 if we choose to use the extra amount,” Collins said. “We could always go lower, but you don’t really want to.”
In total, the proposed community center is expected to cost over $800,000. Organizers had originally planned to apply for the grant during the spring round, but the application was delayed as town council members reconsidered the proposed location.
With the site now finalized, Collins says the project continues moving ahead. “Letters of why we need a community center have been coming in,” she says. “We’ve gotten about three of them, and the donations have started again. And within the last few weeks, I have been able to meet with the North Judson Kiwanis and Starke County Community Services. Both discussions were very positive. We got feedback from the community and Community Services, and they’re very excited and willing to get more involved.”
She adds that over 60 percent of the required income surveys have been completed and returned. Now the town’s looking for volunteers to go door-to-door to help gather the rest.
Additionally, a request for qualifications has been published for engineers interested in working on the project, with responses due Monday, August 15. A letter of intent for the grant funding is due August 19, with the grant application itself due October 14.

Record Amount of Food Pantry Donations Collected at Local Event

The Starke County Community Services food pantry received a donation from a recent community event.
The holidays usually bring in a good amount of food for underprivileged families and then donations drop off. The Bluegrass Jam event helps supply the food pantry with needed funds and items to stock the shelves. The admission fee to the concert featuring local talent is a donation for the food pantry or a monetary gift so the staff at Community Services of Starke County can purchase what is needed for families.
The event at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox on Saturday collected 998 pounds of food and $440 was raised.
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers told the city council members this week that since the program started six years ago, this is a record high for collections in a single event. In all of those years, 6,529 pounds of food and $2,586 has been collected.
