Last month, the Starke County Sheriff’s Department held a fundraiser in conjunction with national ‘No Shave November’ campaign. They gathered a total of $3,700 and donated it to local schools to pay off negative lunch account balances.

The Department raised $2,800 more this year than they did when they held this fundraiser back in 2018.

Sheriff’s Department officials shared that the money was divided between the Knox, North Judson-San Pierre, Oregon-Davis and Culver Community School Corporations. They noted that a number of Starke County students from North Bend and California Townships attend Culver which is why they chose to include them this year.

Officials extended their gratitude to the community members who donated to this cause which is often times overlooked and added that the smiles on the kids’ faces was worth it all.

After two weeks of training, members of the Starke County Mobile Response Team are ready to respond to calls.

Starke County EMS Director Travis Clary said Mobile Response Team members responded to the first overdose call on Monday on their first day of operation.

Those involved in the team include a recovery specialist, an EMT/Paramedic and a police officer.  They all respond to an overdose incident.  The EMT/Paramedic assesses the patient and provides treatment while the police officer is there for security.  The recovery specialist then meets with the overdose patient to discuss needs and rehabilitation measures.  The specialist may be someone who is a former addict who is at least two years sober who is qualified to give life-saving advice.

Those involved in the team will be paid through a grant obtained by Healthlinc.

The Starke County Commissioners approved the Memorandum of Understanding documents this week between the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and Starke County EMS with Healthlinc.

The purchase will be coming from the Jail CEDIT Fund which was approved by the council members last week.

Several Starke County students will be heading back to school with some new clothing thanks to the Kankakee Valley Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P) and the local agencies who participated in the annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ event.

The event was attended by approximately 60 local students as well as Officers from the North Judson and Knox Police Departments and personnel from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Prosecutor’s Office.

North Judson Town Marshal Kelly Fisher addressed the annual initiative Kankakee Valley F.O.P initiative during her report at Monday night’s town council meeting.

Fisher explained, “Through that organization, we raise money throughout the year and on Sunday we did Shop with a cop.”

She continued, “They try to raise enough money where we can have 20 children per school; Judson, Knox and O-D and it just helps the kids and they get to shop with the police officers so we had a lot of fun with that.”

Marshall Fisher mentioned that the agencies work with the school corporations to receive the names of families that would be in need of back-to-school shopping assistance.
