The North Judson Town Council recently considered quotes for drainage modifications at the altitude valve vault.
As previously reported, Town Superintendent Joe Leszek coordinated with officials from CommonWealth Engineering about running electrical service from the existing control panel out at that west tank over to the valve vault so that he can put a sump pump in the bottom of it and heat trace it.
CommonWealth Engineer Intern Sarah Prizio explained that the valve vault is currently functional but it would require manual pumping so making these changes would save the Utility Department time and energy in the long run.
She reminded members that changes had to be made to the designs because the as-builts that were provided to the engineers were inaccurate.
She explained that when they dug up the site, they realized the pipes were about 2 feet lower than expected. Original designs called for a French drain but after discovering the different pipe configuration, they had to make the alterations.
She told the town council members that three quotes were received for the recommended modifications at the altitude valve. Quotes from HRP and Thieneman Construction were around $7,000 while a quote received from the local electric contractor H&T was approximately $2,000.
Prizio noted that the difference in cost has to do with the fact that HRP and Thieneman would have to contract out the work so that would result in a mark-up while H&T is local.
Prizio mentioned that H&T crews have already been working on Water and Wastewater Projects for the town. Town Superintendent Leszek added that he feels they have been very efficient, the crews are professional and they’ve been doing a great job with the work so far.
After some additional discussion about the changes to the project, members ultimately approved the quote from H&T.
