The Internal Revenue Service is now offering taxpayers the option to pay in cash at 7-Eleven locations. The IRS says it’s partnering with ACI Worldwide’s OfficialPayments.com and the PayNearMe Company to provide the service. It lets people make payments without the need of a bank account or credit card at over 7,000 7-Eleven stores nationwide, including locations in South Bend, Mishawaka, and Griffith.
Taxpayers wishing to use the service should visit IRS.gov and follow the steps listed there for cash payments. There’s a fee of $3.99 per payment to use this option, as well as a $1,000 per day limit on payments. The IRS says it can take up to seven days to process these cash payments, so taxpayers should start the process well before the tax deadline to avoid interest and penalty charges.
That’s why the IRS is encouraging those who don’t need to pay in cash to use the IRS Direct Pay option whenever possible. It allows taxpayers to make payments directly from their bank accounts without any fees or pre-registration.
With the addition of the new option for cash payments, taxpayers are reminded to be on the lookout for e-mail scams. The IRS says taxpayers will only get an e-mail from OfficialPayments.com or PayNearMe if they have already initiated the payment process. Those who haven’t taken this step are warned to be careful with any e-mails regarding tax issues or the IRS.
