North Judson-San Pierre School Board members received presentations over the annual school improvement plans when members met for their September meeting.
Elementary School Principal Julie Berndt went first and noted that officials are currently in the proofreading stage and added that their entire document will be more than 70 pages.
She said a Comprehensive Needs Assessment was conducted over the summer to establish what areas needed to be improved upon and additional assessments were done once test scores were available.
She laid out the main ‘focus goals’ that officials are looking to work on in the 2019-2020 school year. The goals include improving the English/Language Arts and Math ILearn scores for grades 3-6 by 5-8 percent compared to the previous year’s scores.
Helping students in grades K-2 reach a score of 60 percent or higher on the end of the school year benchmark PIVOT INSPECT English/Language Arts and Math assessments is another focus of the improvement plan.
Elementary school officials also identified a specific goal related to students in special education classes. The plan notes that they hope they can improve the overall achievement percentage of special needs students by 5-8 percent on the ILearn test.
In addition to highlighting those focus areas and addressing the strategies that will be utilized to accomplish those goals, Berndt touched on some notable achievements and areas where they have seen improvement over the last few years.
Some of those included the success of the uninterrupted 90-minute reading block, increasing access to technology that’s available to students and the noticeable impact of implementing the ‘Bluejay Way’ positive behavior program.
Berndt also emphasized the adoption of a school-wide math series in spring of 2018 and the plans to adopt a school-wide reading series next spring. It was noted that having some consistency between the grade levels seems to be beneficial.
In addition to those things, she highlighted the fact that the curriculum maps have been revised, the Facebook page and school website are regularly updated and they have a very active PTO.
School Board members provided their approval for the Elementary School’s improvement plan to be submitted to state officials prior to the October deadline. The school improvement plan for the junior/senior high school was also presented and will be covered in a future story.

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board adopted the school improvement plans for the elementary school and the junior/senior high school when members met on Tuesday.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin highlighted the key goals that the building principals discussed in detail at last month’s meeting.
Dr. Zupin explained, “At the elementary, they will work on collecting and analyzing data and then academic proficiency in math and reading.”
She went on to say, “At the junior/senior high, math skills and honing in on vocabulary and comprehension skills as well as promoting that positive school environment and communication with the stakeholders.”
Every year, all Hoosier schools are required to submit school improvement plans to the Indiana Department of Education prior to October 12th. Dr. Zupin said that corporation’s plans were submitted to the state before the deadline.

NJ-SP School Board to Consider Adding 5th Grade Basketball to Athletics Program

North Judson-San Pierre School Board members will consider a recommendation to add 5th-grade boys and girls basketball to the corporation’s athletic program when they meet tonight.
The school improvement plans will be up for adoption and members will consider the metal detector and eLearning policies on final reading as well as a request from the FFA to attend a national convention.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin will deliver an update to the board, visitors will have a chance to provide input and board members can discuss any additional business that they deem as necessary.
The NJ-SP School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the board meeting room of the Central Office, located at 801 Campbell Drive.

North Judson-San Pierre Principals Cover School Improvement Plans

When the North Judson San-Pierre School Board met last Tuesday, members heard school improvement plan presentations from both school principals
Both Elementary School Principal Julie Berndt and Middle/High School Principal Jim Polite emphasized creating curriculums that are driven by test results, specifically, scores from the Northwest Evaluation Association test or NWEA.
Polite noted that this is the second year they’re utilizing this specific test, “That’s a test that’s given to our students at three different points during the year that monitors their progress in a multitude of different areas.
At the Middle/High School, Polite said areas of achievement include the school’ dual credit and AP offering, the very popular and successful Ag program, the fact that progress was made in 4 out of the 6 ISTEP testing groups and that despite a drop in the overall state average, 10th Graders ISTEP Scores in language arts and math increased.
Some areas of achievement that Berndt highlighted at the elementary school are the increased use of new technology by both students and staff, unique incentives that reward students for good behavior and attendance, having an active PTO that has helped to improve school-family correspondence as well as utilizing Facebook and the school website to help improve communication.

North Judson-San Pierre School Board members approved the school improvement plan from the Elementary and Jr./Sr High School principals after they provided compelling presentations addressing areas of achievement as well as specific place where progress is needed.
North Judson Jr./Sr. High School Principal Jim Polite explained that one of the areas where the Jr./Sr. High is excelling is the amount of students enrolled in AP and dual credit classes. Those numbers are at an all time high. Polite mentioned that all though they did see significant progress in language arts and math scores on the ISTEP, they are still working to increase proficiency in those areas. He said specific testing is being utilized to identify areas where students are struggling and online assignment programs are used to help them address those problems.
Elementary School Principal Julie Berndt told board members that Elementary students have seen major improvements thanks to teacher collaboration. One of the main goals she presented was continuing teacher collaboration and data analysis in order to incorporate those findings into the curriculum to assist students in deficient areas.
One thing that both principals mentioned as being vital to success was respecting classroom instruction time. Each school does its best to eliminate any unnecessary interruptions that could disrupt student concentration. Another topic that was covered by both principals was the importance of implementing the “Blue Jay Way” into everyday life. The Blue Jay Way is the school’s positive behavioral reminder that encourages achievement, respect and responsibility.

N.J.-S.P. Superintendent Talks Test Scores, School Letter Grades

ISTEP test scores don’t tell the entire story of the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin says unfortunately though they provide a side-by-side comparison of school districts.
“It’s frustrating. I don’t like that, but that’s reality. So we have to do better on the test. It disheartens me that we have legislators and people who think that the test score defines a school and a student. I’m totally against that philosophically. However that’s the way it is now, so we’ve got to do better on the test.”
Zupin says N.J.-S.P. is taking steps to do just that.
“Our school improvement plan addresses that. We are changing the amount of time that we spend on math, in particular. We’re devoting more time to that, so we can’t ignore it.”
Zupin adds standardized test scores are just part of the overall letter grade for schools and corporations. The graduation rate and number of dual credits students receive are also factors.
“Our test scores were not very good last year, and yet we did not fail. I attribute that to those multiple measures. So all the work that went into helping students graduate, and those dual credits, that helped us. You can’t dismiss those good things that we do. It just doesn’t have the same weight as the test.”
Zupin says N.J.-S.P. offers students individual attention and gives them access to both remediation and high ability classes. Additionally dual credit courses, for which students receive both high school and college credits, are taught by teachers. N.J.-S.P. has also offered online credit recovery for the past 10 years.

The two principals at North Judson-San Pierre schools have finalized their school improvement plans ahead of the state’s Dec. 1 deadline to submit them.
Even though ISTEP scores are still embargoed, both elementary Principal Mike McBride and junior/senior high school Principal Jim Polite are anticipating sub-par math scores.
McBride did tell the school board Tuesday that 98 percent of 3rd graders passed the IREAD test, and other indicators point to strong reading proficiency.
As for math, he says school officials are collecting and analyzing data from a range of sources and adopting it to their in-house training and updated curriculum mapping. McBride says the elementary school is also working to improve academic proficiency across the curriculum and to continue to meet targets in reading and math.
N.J.-S.P. Elementary also has a Title 1 School-wide plan that is funded in part by the federal government. McBride says it includes making sure all core classes are taught by highly qualified teachers, ongoing professional development, inclusion of faculty in decision making, parental involvement through activities like literacy nights, assistance for students who are not proficient and working with all area preschool programs to ensure students are ready to start kindergarten.
Polite’s plan recognizes the first year of the new North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School configuration. He says the school has increased its advanced placement and dual credit course offerings and is proud of its extremely successful agriculture program.
Polite acknowledges the needs to improve student proficiency in math by increasing the mastery of key concepts. He says they are administering STAR assessment tests at least three times per year to identify areas in need of remediation.
The junior/senior high school is also promoting a positive school environment by recognizing students for doing things “The Bluejay Way.” It includes respect, responsibility and achievement, and any teacher may nominate any student for going above and beyond in those areas.
Polite says they are also working on increased vocabulary and reading comprehension skills through curriculum-wide exposure to key vocabulary terms and utilization of the STAR test to identify potential weaknesses.
He also stresses shareholder involvement from parents, teachers, administrators and staff.
The school board unanimously approved both school improvement plans.
