North Judson Town Marshal Kelly Fisher will be making a bit more money than her predecessor. The town council approved a salary ordinance amendment last week, raising Fisher’s annual salary to $50,000.

That’s over $1,300 more than what former Town Marshal John Ramos made. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins says the increase was agreed upon when Fisher was hired back in June.

Also during last week’s special meeting, the North Judson Town Council approved the hiring of two new part-time police officers. Collins says they will fill in for the full-time officers, as needed. Part-time officers got a pay raise during the council’s previous meeting, from $15 to $18 an hour.

The Starke County Council will revisit its salary ordinance pertaining to classifications of employees as part-time or skilled part-time.

There are different pay scales for those employees who work part-time and those part-time workers who have developed skills that can be interchangeable between departments. It is up to the department head to determine which level of pay that employee receives.

After a lengthy discussion, the council members asked Auditor Kay Chaffins to give County Attorney Marty Lucas a copy of the salary ordinance and they will discuss changes, if any, during their meeting in August.

Also during Monday’s meeting, council members approved a pay raise for part-time police officers. They’ll be paid $18 an hour, rather than $15, following this week’s amendment to the salary ordinance.

Starke Council Adds Skilled Part-Time Classification to Salary Ordinance

A handful of part-time county employees could be getting pay raises following Monday action by the Starke County Council. They agreed to create a “skilled part-time” wage classification as part of the salary ordinance.

The issue was first raised by Starke County Clerk Vicki Cooley when she requested a pay increase for her election clerk. Cooley says it’s a 32.5-hour-per-week position, but since it’s considered part-time there are no insurance benefits or paid time off.

The skilled part-time classification also includes cooks at the Starke County Jail. The commissioners set the starting wage for skilled part-time employees at $10.13 per hour, which can go up to $12.13 per hour after 90 days at the discretion of the supervisor.

Council members note the policy only applies to a few employees. They do not anticipate a major budgetary impact as a result of the new policy.
