A possible lighting upgrade is being considered at the North Judson-Wayne Town Volunteer Fire Department building.
During the first North Judson Town Council meeting of the year, Fire Chief Joe Leszek informed members about the potential lighting overhaul.
Leszek explained, “We’ve had ballasts going out in the lights in the fire house. I got a quote from a company to switch those from ballast style lights to LED lights which would last 10 years and be more efficient.”
Fire Chief Leszek provided members with information from the only quote he’s received thus far.
He shared, “Right now, the one quote we got was about $30 a bulb so to do the whole firehouse would be around twenty-six hundred bucks [$2,600]”
Leszek told members that he received another number to call to get an additional quote and a few of the members said they had companies in mind that he could check into as well.
Leszek said once some more concrete plans and figures are available for comparison, he will bring those into a meeting to keep the council informed about the selection process.

N.J.-S.P. Board Updated on Lighting Projects, Band Room Relocation

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is taking on some lighting projects during the holiday break. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin told the school board Tuesday improvements at the bus garage are already underway. During the break lighting upgrades will be made in the middle and high school gym. Zupin says care has been taken to ensure that project does not interfere with any scheduled games or practices.
Zupin was also asked about when the band may get their room back now that repairs have been made to the upstairs space that was formerly the weight room. Structural concerns forced the closure of that space two years ago, and the weight room was moved into the band room in the music suite.
Zupin says the weight room cannot be moved back upstairs due to weight restrictions for the mezzanine. It is now being used as a practice area for other athletic programs.
The band director conducts classes on the auditorium stage, but that becomes an issue when functions are scheduled. Also, due to the size of the beginning band, the class is split into two groups, with some of the students taken to the cafeteria to practice.
Zupin promised to find a permanent space for the band by the start of the 2017-18 school year. She says that’s preferable to moving them multiple times. Zupin adds the former band room is an ideal location for the weight room due to its proximity to the gym and locker rooms.

N.J.-S.P. School Board Awards Bids for Energy-Saving Lighting Upgrades

The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is making some lighting upgrades with proceeds from its recent bond refinancing. Last week, the school board approved bids for three lighting projects totaling just over $166,000.
Superintendent Annette Zupin said the upgrades will lead to some savings in the long-term. “[Maintenance Director Wilbur] Collins did indicate that we could see a return on our money as early as a year and a half,” Zupin said, “but the range is from a year and a half to three years we could see a return on that investment.”
The first project involves lighting improvements at the Middle School gym and mezzanine. It was awarded to Herrman & Goetz for a cost of $24,000. That firm was also awarded the bid for the second project. It calls for lighting replacement at the High School gym, mezzanine, and pool. The third project will upgrade all the parking lot lighting and exterior lights on the buildings. Busse Electric will do that work for $79,865.
