North Judson-San Pierre School Board members received a summary of some the changes that are included in the 2019-2020 student handbooks when they met last week.
Some of the changes dealt with updates to state regulations. At the elementary school, information about dyslexia screenings was added. At the high school level, language has been included to reflect the new graduation pathways requirements.
Both schools also included information about the corporation’s e-Learning policies.
Elementary School Principal Julie Berndt highlighted a specific change that was made to an existing policy that was in place.
She shared, “We had in the handbook before they could not have bikes, scooters or skateboards to school. I’m not quite sure why that was, I was a bike rider back in my day. So we are going to let them have them.”
Berndt said there will be a designated area for students to leave their alternative modes of transportation during the school day.
Meanwhile, at the junior/senior high school a change was made to the cell phone policy. Principal Jim Polite mentioned that they felt their past policy was a little too open and was still causing some distractions.
He explained, “What we’re asking for is a policy that would not permit them to be out in the classroom. We’re not going to the extent of frisking kids to make sure they’re not bringing phones into class. They just need to be not out or visible.” Polite continued, “If they’re in their pockets, put away, that’s fine, just not out during classroom time.”
These are just a few of the proposed changes that were covered when school board members heard from administrators about the handbooks. Another change related to the school corporation’s transportation policy will be highlighted in a future article.
The handbooks will be up for adoption during the school board’s next meeting in May.

N.J-S.P. School Board Approves 2017-18 Textbook Fees, Meal Prices, Elementary Handbook

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board is finalizing some plans for next school year. On Tuesday, board members approved the elementary school handbook, textbook fees, and meal prices for the 2017-2018.
Superintendent Annette Zupin said for the most part, there are no major changes. “The handbook changes that you see are very minor, cosmetic, pretty much, with name changes, dates,” she said. “Mrs. [Julie] Berndt, our new elementary principal for next year, she has reviewed the handbook and feels it is appropriate. When she comes in and feels that changes need to be made, she can make addendums, but I’m sure she wants to kind of assess things for a semester or the year. So she is very comfortable with the proposed handbook.”
The handbook for the junior/senior high school was approved last month. Zupin added that next year’s textbook fees will be roughly the same as this year’s, but students in kindergarten through eighth grade will see a slight reduction.
No changes to school meal prices are planned for next year, but the school board did approve some guidelines for dealing with students who fall behind in their payments. Zupin says the policy is required by the National School Lunch Program. “Students will be permitted to charge up to two meals or a total of four dollars,” she explained. “After receiving two regular meals and the account is still negative and they have not paid, we will provide up to two alternate meals, and that is a cheese sandwich and milk for lunch. Those will be charged to them, but that’s their alternative meal. At that point, we really hope that we can contact the parents and make sure that that is paid.”
She encouraged parents to keep an eye on their children’s accounts by using MySchoolBucks.com.

N.J.-S.P. Board Approves Handbook Updates for Junior/Senior High

Changes to the North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School Handbook approved this week by the school board reflect both the consolidation of two buildings into one and the changing times. Principal Jim Polite says next year students will no longer be able to bring backpacks or book bags into classrooms. He says the practice raises safety concerns but it’s been a necessity at N.J.-S.P. because the lockers are too small to hold books and bags and are in bad shape overall. Earlier this year the board approved the purchase of new lockers, which will be installed this summer.
Polite says another policy change addresses an issue that has arisen since middle school students were moved into the high school building. He says they are interacting too much with high school students during passing periods. That will be prohibited in the new handbook.
Another change tweaks the policy for cell phone use in the classroom. Polite says it’s currently at the discretion of individual teachers. The new language will require there to be a valid academic reason for a student to use a cell phone in class.
Additional handbook changes expand the academic integrity section to address copied work and work not done entirely by the student in addition to plagiarism, restrict elevator use to students with a given health concern who are issued a pass and state that students with poor attendance and who are not passing their classes may not be eligible to attend field trips.
