The North Judson-San Pierre School Board gave the green-light for a few different procedural matters when members met last Tuesday.
The school board provided approval for the proposed 2020 School Corporation Budget to be submitted to the County Council for consideration. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said a budget hearing will be held with those officials on Monday, September 16th and then it will be up for adoption on Monday, September 30th.
Board members also permitted a notice to the tax payers related to the Capital Projects and Bus Replacement plans to be advertised. Dr. Zupin said the notice will include dates, times and locations for hearings related to those plans.

North Judson-San Pierre School Officials to Present Proposed Budget for 2019 to the Starke County Council

The Starke County Council will be considering the proposed 2019 budget for the North Judson-San Pierre Community School Corporation at their next meeting.
When NJ-SP School Board members met Tuesday evening, they approved a motion to submit the budget to county officials. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin explained since they have to provide the document to the county council members since the school board is appointed. The Starke County Council will meet on Monday, September 17th.
In addition to approving the budget submission, school board members also permitted a “notice to the taxpayers” to be advertised. The notice will simply inform the public about a hearing that will be held over the Capital Projects and Bus Replacement Plans.
The hearing will be held during the school board’s next meeting on Tuesday, September 18th.

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Delivers Capital Project Update

Projects at the North Judson-San Pierre Schools are coming along nicely, according to Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin.
During the superintendent’s report Tuesday night, Dr. Zupin shared some of the progress that’s been made thus far. She said that lighting work is nearly complete, with the company pulling some of their workers at this point. The only areas that still need to be finished are the atrium and auditorium.
She added that the sidewalks at the Elementary school have been poured and the ones for the Jr-Sr High will come next. Zupin also noted that the new doors for the secure entrances at the Jr.-Sr. High have been installed and work on securing the Elementary school began yesterday.
Dr. Zupin said that the fence posts for the tennis courts will be installed this week, with fencing to come next. The dugouts for the baseball and softball diamonds have a solid foundation and structure built and they will soon affix the roofs.
As far as the pool project goes, Zupin said that crews will begin filling it today. She stated that the balancing of the chemicals and filtration will be monitored for about a week or so. She mentioned that a temporary dehumidification unit will be utilized in there until the permanent unit is installed.

Starke County Commissioners Discuss Capital Projects

The Starke County Commissioners took time Monday night to discuss several capital projects on the schedule for this year.
Commissioner Kathy Norem pointed out that the tuckpointing needs to be done on the courthouse. A portion of it was done a couple of years ago, but problems persist.
“It was not tuckpointed behind the gutters,” said Norem. “There’s water coming in there that is already damaging some of the new stuff that we had done. So, we got a quote last year for that but it was too late in the year for them to do that.”
The downspouts will need to be removed in order to complete the tuckpointing and then they would be reinstalled. Some stone repairs over the entryways will be done as part of this quote. The new quote came in at around $58,500 which was unanimously approved. The project may not begin until August.
The commissioners also discussed the purchase of a new ambulance for Starke County EMS at over $130,000 and two squad cars for the Starke County Sheriff’s Office. The commissioners approved a motion that requests the county council members to appropriate up to $34,000 for a new squad car out of the Jail CEDIT fund.
Other projects discussed include fencing around the air conditioners at the courthouse, a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, a new computer server at the jail, and the replacement of curbing on the west side of the Starke County Annex No. 2 building. Quotes will be obtained for the projects to determine if they can be done yet this year.
In addition, the commissioners approved a motion to request approximately $50,000 for the county’s grant match in CEDIT funds for the courthouse elevator project. The county council will discuss that later this month.
If quotes allow all of the projects to be complete this year, they will be paid for in stages as money becomes available in the CEDIT fund each month.
