The Starke County Environmental Management District is looking into alternatives to the drop-off recycling bins placed at locations around the county. Last week the ones in both North Judson and Knox were pulled due to excessive dumping of trash and other non-recyclable items in and around the containers.
The county still maintains five drop-off sites: 6996 S. State Road 10 in Knox, which is behind the Bass Lake Property Owners Association building; 4820 N. State Road 23 in Grovertown, which is east of the Starke County EMS building; West Plymouth Street in Hamlet, underneath the town’s water tower; 7784 N. SR 23 in Walkerton, in the north parking lot of the Koontz Lake Fire Department; and across from the San Pierre Fire Station at the Corner of San Pierre Road and Fisher Street.
After a lengthy and at times spirited discussion, environmental district board members agreed that providing curbside recycling totes to rural residents is the most workable solution. Knox has offered that for several years. Koontz Lake and Hamlet also have curbside recycling, and North Judson is implementing it Aug. 1.
Together those communities equal about 3,000 households served by curbside recycling, which leaves 9,000 with minimal options.
A representative from Republic Services says mandating curbside recycling pickup keeps costs down due to improved efficiency. He says the county could also realize greater savings by entering into a longer-term contract.
The board also discussed adding trash pickup for rural residents as a way to possibly realize additional savings. However, opinions of those at the meeting were mixed, and it was noted the items go into separate trucks.
For now the board is just gathering information in order to present a proposal to the Starke County Commissioners for consideration in the next few months. They want quotes on mandatory and optional curbside recycling and recycling coupled with trash pickup.

North Judson Recycling Drop-Off Site to Be Removed, Curbside Recycling Discussions Continue

Whether or not North Judson gets curbside recycling pickup, the recycling drop-off site currently offered by the Starke County Environmental Management District will be removed by July 1. That’s what town council member Jane Ellen Felchuk told the rest of the council Monday. Town officials say it’s been difficult to keep the site clean, and they want the bins taken away as soon as possible.
As an alternative, North Judson may hire Republic Services, the company that handles the town’s garbage, to pick up recycling as well. The cost to residents would be $36 a year.
But the $20 a year in tax money that currently goes to the Starke County Environmental Management District would not decrease, since the organization still provides other services. That drew a few complaints from residents during Monday’s meeting.
Council member John Rowe said up until now, he hadn’t heard from anyone who opposed curbside recycling, and he welcomes any input. “Every single community has curbside,” he pointed out. “Bass Lake is going to have it this summer. Knox has it. Everybody has it. So we’re behind, as it is.”
Concerns were also expressed about the fact that Republic Services now collects trash from the streets, rather than the alleys, creating some challenges when cars are parked there. Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins explained that it’s Republic’s policy not to go through alleys, and the town has no control over the matter.
The town council is expected to make a decision on curbside recycling at an upcoming meeting.

Dispose of Hazardous Materials During Starke County’s 2016 Environmental Days
Starke County residents will have a chance to get rid of unwanted tires, electronics, and many other household items during the Starke County Environmental Management District’s 2016 Environmental Days. Residents can drop off tires, appliances, and electronics tomorrow afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Starke County Highway Garage at 3835 East 250 North.
The collection event continues on Saturday, between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. In addition to the items previously mentioned, the Environmental Management District will also be accepting various types of household hazardous waste on Saturday. These include household cleaners, chemicals, acids, auto fluids, oils, and unwanted medicines.

6/12 & 13/2015 Don’t Burn It or Bury it, Bring it Down to Starke County’s Environmental Days

If you’re unsure about how to properly dispose of something,
chances are you’ll be able to unload it at the Starke County Environmental
Management facility this weekend. The hazardous waste collection event is
located at 3835 East 250 North in Knox and runs Friday, June 12 from 3:30 until
5 pm and Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 am until 1 pm. This service is being
provided free of charge to Starke County property owners only.
Friday feel free to bring in any household appliances such
as televisions, computers, stoves and refrigerators. You can also bring in any
tires you’re wishing to dispose of but the facility can only accept 5 regular
tires or one farm type tire before charging an additional fee.
Certain items will only be accepted on Saturday including
any over the counter medications, chemicals of any kinds, fluorescent lamps,
PCB ballasts, household batteries, corrosive liquids or acids, aerosols, motor
oil and antifreeze.
Items that the facility absolutely will not take include
narcotics or controlled substances, your everyday garbage or recycling,
furniture, clothes, concrete and construction materials.
The Starke County Environmental Management District
employees reserve the right to refuse any item. If you have any questions about

A new website has been launched to help you find more information on how to make your environmental assessment payment and recycling in Starke County.
Visit www.starkeenvironmental.com where the hours for the Starke County Environmental Management District are listed, as well as the location and more information on district events. Also, learn how to recycle the items that are otherwise difficult to properly dispose of.
There is also a section on precycling, which is a process in reducing the waste of what we produce to help reduce the amount we need to recycle.

A Great Big THANK YOU...
On Thursday, August 19th, Starke County Environmental Management donated a chair - made out of recycled plastic bottles - to the North Judson-Wayne Township Library. We're sure it will be quite a conversation piece and highly desired by the children who visit.
They also left us a recycle container for plastic bottles. Just think, if you bring in your plastic bottles to recycle you will be giving a "hand" to everyone.
