Starke County Democrats to Choose New Assessor

The Starke County Democratic Party will caucus on May 25th to select a new assessor. Rhonda Milner is stepping down from that elected position on May 26th.

By law a county assessor must be at least a Level 3 assessor-appraiser if he or she is elected after Jan. 1, 2012.

Starke County Democratic Party Chairman Kenny Wallace says the two assistants in the assessor’s office both meet those guidelines, but he only expects one of them to seek the position.

The assessor is responsible for identifying, listing and calculating the assessed value of all real and personal property. Representatives from the Starke County Assessor’s office physically inspect 25 percent of the parcels in the county each year to ensure accurate information for every property record. Accurate records help provide accurate assessments to the taxpayers.

County officials noted Milner is leaving the office in good shape and thanked her for her service.

North Judson Democrats to Choose New Town Council Member

The Democratic Party will caucus later this month to replace a member of the North Judson Town Council. Justin Davis is resigning from his seat on the council, which he’s held since 2013.

Three precinct committee members will meet on Monday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at North Judson Town Hall to choose a replacement. Starke County Democratic Party Chair Kenny Wallace says those interested in running for the council seat must be Democrats and need to file a Declaration of Candidacy with the Starke County Clerk at least three days before the caucus.

Starke Dems to Caucus September 23rd

The Starke County Democratic Party will caucus to find a new Coroner a little later this month.

A vacancy was created when former Coroner Adam Gray stepped down, citing professional and family reasons for the decision. Starke County has partnered with Jasper County in the interim to continue providing the Coroner service.

Members of the Democratic Party in Starke County had previous planned to caucus on September 10th. It was found the party was four hours short of a 10-day requirement to allow candidates to develop a declaration of candidacy.

According to Democratic Party Chairman Kenny Wallace, the caucus will now take place on September 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at the VFW. While Starke County has 21 precincts, 18 precinct committee members will vote on the list of candidates.

Jasper County Coroner Dr. Andrew Boersma has said they would be happy to assist with the transition.

Any Coroner appointed in Starke County would be required to take a class as well as complete an externship with a pathologist to better operate the office in the future.
