Ancilla College Celebrates 2016 Graduates

Ancilla College graduated its 49th class in school history on Saturday. The ceremony took place at the Ancilla Domini Chapel. The private, two-year school had 91 graduation candidates.

“I am very proud of the graduates,” said Ancilla College President Dr. Ken Zirkle.  “I am honored to be able to send this group of students out into the world knowing that their education here at Ancilla has better prepared them for their jobs or continued education.”

An Honors Convocation was also held on Friday, May 6, at the Ancilla Domini Chapel, as outstanding students were honored for their achievements.

Of the 91 candidates, 23 received recognition for graduating Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude.

Another 26 were honored for their affiliation with Ancilla’s Beta Beta Beta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college honor society in American higher education. Eighteen graduates were honored with being named among Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Graduates receiving additional special honors were: Travon Brackett, Anchorage, Alaska (Departmental Honor for Criminal Justice); Mewsette Cartwright, Plymouth, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Business Administration); Jacqulin Collins, Plymouth, Ind. (Departmental Honor for History); Joshua Felty, Knox, Ind. (Scholar of Distinction; Athlete Scholar; Departmental Honor for General Studies); Randi Fier, Knox, Ind. (Scholar of Distinction); Andrew McCarty, Knox, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Behavioral Science); Kayte Miller, Royal Center, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Elementary Education); Eric Rader, Plymouth, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Elementary Education); James Rimel, Bremen, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Criminal Justice); John Secrest, Burket, Ind. (Departmental Honor for Secondary Education); Sophia Smith, Zeeland Mich. (Athlete Scholar; Departmental Honor for SMIT); Amanda Stephany, La Porte, Ind. North Judson-San Pierre High School Graduation Rate Soars

The North Judson-San Pierre High School principal attributes the uptick in the graduation rate at the corporation to the efforts of determined students, staff, and counselors.

The rate has only gone up slightly each year for the past few years, but Annette Zupin told the school board this week that it means a lot to see students improve. Zupin believes an 11 percent increase in the graduation rate between 2013 and 2014 is due to the determination of students to graduate. The graduation rate was at 84.7 percent in 2013 and 95.8 percent in 2014. The school board members are hoping for the same or better results this year.

Zupin also credited the counselors for creating an avenue to direct students in the right direction, so they get the help they need to pass End of Course Assessment tests. She believes the A+ credit recovery program at the school helps students who are failing in English/Language Arts. Students who may not have strong English/Language Arts skills can utilize the program to strengthen those skills and it’s available online. The online course is offered in addition to a classroom course for help. A separate English remediation class is also available.
