Stay Safe While Using Fireworks This Summer

As the Fourth of July approaches, so does the season for firework-related injuries, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Last year, over 70 percent of firework-related injuries occurred during the first week of July.

State officials say it’s important to keep some safety tips in mind, during your summer celebrations. Only use fireworks in a clear, open area, and light them one at a time. Keep a fire extinguisher or a water supply nearby. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke when using fireworks.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security says never let children handle or light fireworks without adult supervision. Consider giving younger kids glow sticks instead of traditional sparklers, which can burn hot enough to melt glass, according state officials.

Last year, the Indiana State Department of Health got 230 reports of fireworks injuries. That’s nearly 50 more than in 2015. More than 40 percent of those involved people age 18 or younger.

Stay Safe When Buying and Using Fireworks

If your Independence Day celebrations include the use of fireworks, the Indiana State Fire Marshal has a few tips for keeping yourself safe.
Only purchase fireworks from a vendor with a valid Indiana fireworks sales permit. The State Fire Marshal’s Office says if a fireworks retailer does not have a permit on display and is unable to provide one when requested, residents should call the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire and Building Safety at 317-232-2222.
Additionally, it’s illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase fireworks. It’s also illegal to buy fireworks other than 1.4G consumer fireworks. Other types may be more explosive.
Once you get the fireworks home, make sure to store them in a cool, dry place, and keep them out of the reach of children. Because of the intense heat produced by sparklers, the State Fire Marshal says to think about buying glow sticks for kids instead.

Play it Safe When Using Fireworks

The Fourth of July is an exciting holiday filled with picnics and other celebrations that may include fireworks. Indiana State Police officers urge you to play it safe when using fireworks.

Only adults can purchase fireworks. A person 18 and older has to be present when anyone younger than 18 is using or possessing consumer fireworks. Children must be supervised at all times when fireworks are in use.

Fireworks can only be used on the user’s property or if permission has been granted for use on another property. Fireworks can be used at place that has been designated by the Indiana State Fire Marshal.

Indiana State Police officers say fireworks may be discharged on the Fourth of July from 9 a.m. to midnight. Any person who violates this law can be charged with a Class C infraction. Cities and towns have different ordinances regarding the use of fireworks and the times they can be discharged so refer those inquiries to local officials.

If anyone recklessly, knowingly or intentionally uses fireworks and there is bodily injury, that person can be charged with a Class D felony. If property damage is caused, a class A misdemeanor could be filed.
