After a few months of searching for the perfect fit, a new executive director has been selected for the Starke County Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber President Jerry Gurrado reported they were fortunate that there was great interest in the position.
After multiple rounds of interviews, Gurrado said a number of candidates were on the brink but the committee felt that Brenda Palmer checked all their boxes.
President Gurrado added that Chamber officials are excited to have Brenda hit the ground running and extend the quality of previous Directors.
Her predecessor, Jessica Craig, sat on the Chamber Board of Directors for three years and served as the executive director for two. She stepped down from her position as director in April of this year and now works as the Center at Donaldson Marketing Director.
Palmer comes to the Chamber with a variety in her background and is described as uniquely qualified. She said she used work as a trucking manager and had extensive experience working with agencies such as the DOT and OSHA.
Palmer said while she doesn’t have past experience with the Starke County Chamber of Commerce, she’s looking forward to getting out in the community to help familiarize residents with everything the organization does.
She added that she wants to make people more aware that the Depot, the Chamber’s headquarters, has a lot to offer, including materials with various things to do in the area, resources for a variety of reputable businesses as well as a lot of local history.
Palmer’s responsibilities will include various duties at the Chamber office and working with tourism as well as bouncing throughout the county to serve current membership and secure new ones. She will also be manning the Chamber Wheel at the 4-H Fair next week. Feel free to stop by and say hi.

Starke County Chamber of Commerce Hires Executive Director

The Starke County Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director. Jessica Craig was appointed to that position last week. She’s been serving in an interim capacity since Debbie Mix left in April after seven years at the helm of the organization.
Craig previously served on the Starke County Chamber Board of Directors. President Jerry Gurrado says she knows the county well, thanks to her background as a broker with Century 21 Affiliated.
Craig is also a founding member of the Young Professionals of Starke County organization. They recently grew out of the Quality of Place group and are the driving force behind the outdoor movie presentations around the county. She’s also a Leadership Starke County graduate.
“Jessica brings a dynamic energy with many innovative ideas to the chamber, and we are thrilled that she was interested in becoming the new executive director,” Gurrado said. “Look for her to be out and about in the county, making new contacts and renewing existing ones.”

Starke County Chamber Executive Director Announces Departure

The Starke County Chamber of Commerce will soon have a new executive director. Debbie Mix is leaving after seven years in that position to pursue a new career opportunity.
In a letter to chamber members, Mix says Friday, April 7 will be her last day. She adds she appreciates living in Starke County and knowing all the wonderful people and places that make this such a great place to live.
Starke County Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Gurrado praises Mix for her work in transitioning the chamber into a county entity, expanding membership and being the face of the organization.
“On behalf of every Chamber member and Board of Directors member, I wish to thank Debbie for her dedication and service,” Gurrado added.
He says the next executive director will need to “wear a variety of hats.” In addition to conducing day-to-day chamber of commerce operations, he or she will spend nine hours per week working to expand tourism in Starke County.
Gurrado adds experience in a nonprofit is desired but not necessary. The chamber is looking for a people person who believes in the mission of serving the entire county. He says a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel are critical and a general knowledge of QuickBooks is necessary.
Board members will conduct essential chamber services until a new executive director can be hired. Gurrado says the board will strive to find just the right person rather than hurrying the selection process just to fill the spot.

Community Services of Starke County Names New Executive Director

Community Services of Starke County has a new executive director. The board of directors selected longtime employee Charmaine Dunkel to head the nonprofit agency.
Dunkel has served as interim executive director since Becky Anspach was terminated in January. She’s previously worked as an administrative assistant, energy assistance intake specialist and nutrition site manager at Community Services of Starke County and will take over as executive director immediately.
Dunkel holds a bachelor of human resource management from Indiana State University and a MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Community Services of Starke County provides services to low-income and senior citizen Starke County residents. They include information and assistance, outreach, public transportation, nutrition services like homebound and congregate meals, energy assistance programs, the food pantry and homemaker services.
