N.J.-S.P. May Add Planned eLearning Days to Give Teachers more Professional Development Time

North Judson-San Pierre students may get a couple planned eLearning days next school year, to give teachers more time to work on curriculum. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin recently told the school board that while the existing Bluejay Collaboration Time is helpful, it isn’t enough, according to last fall’s curriculum audit.

“We need more than two hours two times next year for teachers to meet – and I’m going to give an example – for Mr. Gappa who’s in Math to be able to discuss Math with all of the high school Math teachers and the junior/senior high, but they also need some time to find out what the fourth grade, where Mrs. Harper’s teaching, what they’re doing. We need times for them to talk.”

To solve that problem, the school board will be asked this month to update the 2019-2020 school calendar, to convert October 28 and January 20 from “BCT days” to planned eLearning days. “Those days, teachers will be here, and part of their time has to be answering questions and helping the kids but part of the time can be on those meetings,” Zupin explained.

She added that plans are in the works to help prevent bus drivers and other support staff from losing wages because of the extra eLearning days. “Our intent was never to save money on this,” Zupin said. “So I believe what the supervisors are looking at, ‘Can the bus drivers have professional development?’ ‘Can the teacher assistants have professional development?’ So I don’t have a concrete answer as to what they will be doing, but we will do a better job of that.”

Zupin added that teachers and students did a great job during N.J.-S.P.’s first year of eLearning, but said there are some things that the school corporation needs to do better. She planned to send out an eLearning survey to parents, students, and staff, to get feedback.

North Judson-San Pierre School members held the final reading over the schools eLearning policy when members met last Tuesday.

The members provided unanimous approval for the policy. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin noted that following fall break, teachers will be engaging in some purposeful planning for eLearning practice lessons to prepare students for future eLearning days.

She explained, “They will do the assignments and the teacher will be there to make sure that everybody knows how to log in correctly and also submit so these are onsite.”

Unlike the practice days, students will work from home on the two pre-scheduled eLearning days. The first day is scheduled for Monday, February 18th and the other date will be determined at a later date.

Dr. Zupin noted that some teachers have already sent out specific information about eLearning to parents and others will be sending out more details out soon.

If you have any questions contact your students’ teacher directly or call the NJ-SP Administration Office at 574-896-2155.

Since it is their first year implementing eLearning, North Judson-San Pierre School officials had to create some policies to go along with the program. School Board members considered the policies on first reading when they met Tuesday evening.

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin noted that the Teacher’s Association and the schools’ administrators were consulted to craft a document that fits for NJ-SP. She added that they also utilized support and resources from other area schools.

The policies passed on first reading and will be up for adoption at the board’s next meeting on Tuesday, October 16th.

She reminded the members that they’ll be holding two pre-planned days this year. She added that though practice days will take place in October, many teachers are already preparing students and getting them familiarized with the process.

Dr. Zupin emphasized that students will not be penalized if they don’t have access to the internet. There are mechanisms in place to allow students extra time to turn in an assignment if they were unable to get it completed due to connectivity issues.

Within the next few weeks, parents will receive some informative letters from the superintendent as well as their child’s teacher regarding eLearning and what is expected of their student.

North Judson-San Pierre Officials Consider Implementing eLearning

Officials at North Judson-San Pierre schools are discussing the possibility of implementing eLearning in the future.

During Tuesday night’s school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin told board members that with the number of snow days and delays recently, some teachers and community members have been asking about bringing eLearning to NJ-SP

While discussing the possibility Dr. Zupin stated, “Please know that I will not do that unless the teachers are ready and not just the teachers, we need our community to understand what it is so if we choose to go this way, we’ll be sure to prepare everybody for it.”

She said she’s been researching the implementation of eLearning and talking with Department of Education representatives, who say there are expectations and parameters associated with such a decision. Requirements include ensuring that students have appropriate access to necessary technology and making sure that staff provides meaningful lessons for those days.

The superintendent later mentioned NJ-SP believes there is no “alternative” or “substitute” for quality teachers instructing students, therefore they don’t want to regularly trade a traditional school day for an eLearning day. However, she did say they feel it is important to expose students to digital learning on a regular basis and it would be nice to offset a couple of make-up days when they have inclement weather that results in a cancelation.

Dr. Zupin said that within the last two weeks, teachers and administrators have engaged in positive discussions about eLearning, and they’re ready to move forward with the concept. Before that can happen professional development and practice need to occur and parents need to be informed about the process.

Zupin said it is the hope of school officials that NJ-SP students and faculty will utilize approximately two to three eLearning days in the 2018-2019 school year. During the meeting she did say that depending on the level of readiness, there’s a chance they may even try it out sometime this spring.
