WoodStarke Organizers Get to Work

WoodStarke logoPlanning is underway for this year’s WoodStarke festival at Wythogan Park.
Event organizer Jacob Lippner says that his team already have a few ideas in mind for WoodStarke 3, “We are going to do the art by the river walk, and we’re going to open that up to every kind of art – the industrial, the clothing making, stuff like that. It’s going to be anything that you make yourself to display it. Also, we’re going to have the music as usual. We’re working on getting the bands all put together.” A car show, as well as games for children are also expected to return this year.
WoodStarke volunteers had their first planning meeting for this year’s event on Tuesday. Lippner says there’s been a good amount of interest from people wanting to help out, “We had nine people that seemed very interested and motivated to get it. Everybody I ask around the county that have been to it before, they’re really interested in getting in started. I had a good outreach, and a lot of good people e-mailing me and going through the WoodStarke [Facebook] page to tell me they weren’t going to make the meeting but they want to be a part of it. So, I’ve got a pretty good number of people, a lot of motivated people, that will bring a lot to the event.”
Organizers have a lot of work to do, before WookStarke 3 can take place this September. Right now, they’re looking for people interested in designing an official logo for this year’s event, to continue the trend of having a unique logo each year. The volunteers are also seeking sponsors for a run/walk and for event t-shirts. However, Lippner says one of their biggest challenges is continuing to promote WoodStarke, to make sure everyone knows about it.
He adds the goal of the event is to bring Starke County closer together. “We want to promote community, bring us back to that small-town community where everybody comes and joins in on something,” he says. “This is absolutely free to come and look at the art and just to bring a different type of atmosphere to this county is what we’re really looking for.”
Anyone interested in helping out with WoodStarke 3 or designing a logo for the event is invited to get in touch with organizers using the WoodStarke Facebook page. The next planning meeting will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m. near the basketball court at Wythogan Park.
WoodStarke 3 will take place Saturday, September 10.

8/29/2015 WoodStarke Returning to Wythogan Park

Published:  By: , WKVI

woodstarkeJust because school is back in session, doesn’t mean the summer fun has to stop. Coming up at the end of August is the second annual WoodStarke in Wythogan Park. The event is hosted by the city of Knox and offers a plethora of activities for all ages with a focus on art, music and health.
This year there will be a center stage for the performers to use which will be located to the left as you enter the park from Water street. Some of the acts included in this year’s show are Other Organs, PS150, Radiate, Seldom Told, South of Sorrow and Wanda Carter who performs bluegrass, gospel and yodeling. Donations are still being accepted to help offset the cost of the center stage. Admission and most other activities at WoodStarke are cost-free so the generosity of the community is what will help defray the cost of the stage.
The remainder of the activities will be more centrally located than last year, in the area around the concession stand. IU Health Starke Hospital will be there providing healthy snacks and drinks. Some of the activities included during the event are a corn-hole tournament, end-of-season farmers market, art in the park, open-mic, and dance lessons.
This year there will also be a Starke County scavenger hunt. A vehicle and cellphone are required for this portion. Register between noon and 3:30 pm to pick up the scavenger list and instructions. The winner will be the one who visited the most sites in the shortest time. Speeding is considered cheating, and is prohibited.
Healthlinc will have a mobile unit on-site offering comprehensive dental evaluations for all ages. Call Healthlinc’s Knox office at 574-772-7400 for information or to schedule an evaluation. Healthlinc also will have an Affordable Care Act navigator available to answer questions.
Starting at 3 pm you can register for the Moving Starke County Forward One Mile At A Time event. The start time for the event is 4 pm and you walk one or more miles around a predetermined one-mile path around the park. Register for a free T-shirt and to enter the drawing for prizes. Walk as much as you like, but only one mile is required to qualify for the prize drawing.
Signs will be posted to direct traffic since the traffic pattern will be changed to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The event begins at 10 am on August 29. Access to the park will temporarily be blocked off to allow Culver Pipes and Drums to march into Wythogan Park. If you’d like to view the opening even arrive prior to 10 am. For more information or to set up a donation, contact MJ Bendt at mjbendt@emarqmail.com or (574)-772-3860.

8/29/2015 WoodStarke is Back!

good jpegCome out to Wythogan Park on August 29 for an event full of music, food and fun for everyone. WoodStarke is scheduled to commence at 10 am and run all day on that Saturday in August. Throughout the day, highlights will include a variety of music, games for the kids and artistic displays as well as activities focusing on local talent and Starke County. Similar to last year’s event all activities and healthy food will be free to the public, however this year’s event will feature something new.
For the first time, WoodStarke will feature a center stage for musical performances. In addition to various musical groups and bands, who either perform at no charge or obtain their own sponsorship, individuals and small groups are invited to perform as bands are setting up. Other improvements include rearranging activities around a more central location as well as a better parking situation.
With the improvements planned for WoodStarke 2015, additional sponsorship and donations are still needed. All funding for the event will be recognized and may be processed through Moving Starke County Forward.
To become involved in planning, participating in or to assist in funding the event, you can message WoodStarke officials on their Facebook page or email woodstarke2015@yahoo.com. You can also call the Chamber of Commerce at 574-772-5548 or the Tourism Bureau at 574-772-0896 and mention your interest in getting involved in WoodStarke.
