Hamlet’s annual celebration of classic transportation returns this weekend. The Yellowstone Trail Fest takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Starke County Fairgrounds.
Saturday’s highlights include the Dr. Leinbach Memorial Zucchini Contest, a car show, and musical performances from Mark & Liza, PS 150, South of Sorrow, and Seldom Told.
Sunday’s festivities kick off with the Starke County Youth Club Rainbow Splash Fun Run and Walk at 8:00 a.m. The re-purposed metal sculpture contest returns Sunday, and the Yellowstone Trail Fest Parade steps off at 2:00 p.m.
Bounce houses, a water slide, and the Indiana Historical Society’s History on Wheels exhibit will be featured throughout the event.

“Wish Upon a Cure” During Starke County Relay for Life Friday Evening

Disney’s Wish Upon a Cure is the theme for the 2017 Starke County Relay for Life event. It gets under way tomorrow afternoon at the Hamlet Fairgrounds. Ericka Taylor-Joseph is the chair for the 18-hour event.
“Everything will be Disney themed. We have a lot of family-friendly activities. If you’ve never been to a Relay for Life event, this is a time where we celebrate our survivors, we remember those we’ve lost, and we fight back against cancer.”
Taylor-Joseph says each hour will feature a different activity, starting at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremony. For instance, there will be “Frozen” Olaf melted water balloon toss and “Beauty and the Beast” themed Miss Relay contest. Participating gentlemen will dress up as women, so there may be some Disney Princesses with beards.
Taylor-Joseph adds the luminaria ceremony is the highlight of the evening.
“It’s a very moving ceremony where you can decorate a luminary bag, and it’s lit up for anyone that’s survived cancer that you have in your family or that’s someone that you lost. It’s a very emotional, moving ceremony, and it pretty much is what got me hooked the very first time I was there.”
Taylor-Joseph stresses Relay for Life is open to everyone, regardless of whether they are part of a team that has raised money all year or not. She encourages anyone who wants to come out and take part in the activities and atmosphere to stop by the Starke County Fairgrounds tomorrow evening. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Starke County Relay for Life wraps up Saturday at 9 a.m.

6/2/2017 Hamlet Lions Club to Provide Food During Relay for Life

Members of the Hamlet Lions Club will be cooking for a good cause this weekend at the Starke County Fairgrounds. President Mitch Siemens says they will open their building on Friday to prepare food for Starke County Relay for Life supporters and volunteers.
“We’re going to cook hamburgers and hot dogs and Polish sausage and French fries and have some pop there and nachos and cheese and all sorts of good stuff,” Siemens said during a visit to the WKVI morning show.
He adds the Lions Club will donate all of its profits and then some to Starke County Relay for Life.
“We started off all of our profits go, but our profits were only $350-400, so we just give a flat $500. If we make more than $500 we’ll give more than $500. Nothing less than the $500.”
Hamlet Lions Club members will be serving food Friday night until at least 10 p.m. Starke County’s Relay for Life event gets under way at 3 p.m. at the Starke County Fairgrounds and continues until 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Circus Comes to Hamlet in Early June
The circus will be coming to Hamlet in just over two weeks.
The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus says they will be setting up at the Starke County Fairgrounds on June 6th. Performances will run that day at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m.
This is the 31st edition of the show. There is more to the circus festivities than the 90 minute performances, according to a press release.
The morning of the circus, animals used in the show are unloaded, the big top tent is set-up, and a tour of the site is offered. That tour will allow families an opportunity to meet the performers and learn about the animals and their caretaking.
Several performers, including: Trapeze Artists, Unicyclists, and Tight Rope Walkers are included in the lineup.
