The Starke County Youth Club is once again giving residents a fun way to support its programs next weekend. The Rainbow Splash color run will take place on Saturday, August 17, during the Yellowstone Trail Fest in Hamlet.
Participants can choose from a competitive 5K or a family fun run/walk that’s just over a mile. Runners and walkers will be sprayed with colored powder as they make their way through the town. The money raised will help support the Starke County Youth Club’s after-school and summer programs.
The Rainbow Splash starts next Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. CDT at the Hamlet Fire Station, with on-site registration starting at 8:00 a.m. You can also sign up on the Starke County Youth Club’s website.

Starke County Youth Club Accepting Applications
SCYC is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year! We're in need of aides and instructors at our Knox and Oregon-Davis afterschool programs.
Aides must be 16 years old and instructors must be 18 years old. You can download the application at thescyc.org/employment. This document must be emailed to info@thescyc.org or mailed to PO Box 442 in Knox.

Starke County Youth Club Secures Grant to Install Statue in Knox Serenity Gardens

The Mayor of Knox has been coordinating with the Starke County Youth Club about an artistic addition for the downtown area.
Mayor Dennis Estok informed council members last week that the Youth Club has acquired a grant to install a statue in Serenity Gardens, the gathering space adjacent to the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center.
Estok mentioned, “I think that coincides with what we’re trying to do in the city because that’s another thing that we want to start promoting is the arts in the City of Knox so I think it’s only fitting to partner with the Youth Club to do that.”
The statute unveiling will be held at the site at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29th.
A member of the public inquired about when the Serenity Gardens mural would be finished.
Mayor Estok noted that he still needs to touch base with the artist to discuss the timeline for the completion of the project. However, he did note that he expects the artist to be able to work on it more once school is out since he is a teacher.

North Judson-San Pierre School Board Approves 2019 Summer School Programs

North Judson-San Pierre School Board members approved the 2019 summer school programs when they met Tuesday night.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin provided the board with a synopsis of some of the classes they’re looking to offer this summer.
She told members there are particular programs that are reimbursable through the Indiana Department of Education. One of those programs is the Supervised Agriculture Experience.
She explained, “Miss Emily Duvall has offered this for the past several years and does a great job. It’s project based and that will begin June 11th.”
The other reimbursable program will be a 3rd grade reading class offered to students who do not pass the IREAD test.
Dr. Zupin noted that the IDOE requires at least 15 students to sign up for these programs. If they don’t reach that amount, the classes will not be offered.
Superintendent Zupin stated that there are two programs they’re looking to offer that would be grant funded.
She told members, “Other summer school classes that I would like to offer that are funded by grants are the High Ability and the Kindergarten Countdown.”
Zupin continued, “That’s funded through the Starke County Community Foundation. They fund all three county schools’ kindergarten summer school.”
Both of those programs would run from June 3rd through the 7th.
Dr. Zupin was also seeking approval for the Starke County Youth Club to offer their annual three week summer school opportunity for NJ-SP students.
Board members approved the proposed programs with a unanimous vote.

This fun camp is open to kids in grades 3-8 and will be hosted at the Oregon-Davis campus. You can get a registration form at any SCYC afterschool program, or by calling our office at 574-772-1665. The cost is $30 per participant and covers ALL supplies.
