Congratulations Academic Junior Bowl Teams!
Congratulations to the Academic Junior Bowl Teams! They competed on Saturday at Laporte High School against 57 other teams in our class. The Social Studies team placed 8th in the state! The English team placed 10th in the state! The Social Studies and English teams received at 2nd place at our area competition! The math team placed 12th in the state. The Math team received a 4th place at our area competition. Great job by all teams! We are proud of our Bluejay Academic Teams!

Preliminary Work on North Judson-San Pierre Capital Projects to Start Soon

Preliminary work will soon begin on a series of capital projects at North Judson-San Pierre, according to Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin.
At the February NJSP school board meeting, members approved contractors for approximately $4.2 million worth of projects. They also learned that since the entire Lease Project came in under budget, a few alternates can be tackled as well, including the addition of a digital sign on Highway 10.
When members met Tuesday night, Zupin alerted them that the signage has been ordered and they received the necessary permit. She also mentioned that some work will commence while students are on spring break, which runs from March 26th through the 30th.
Some of the preliminary work that will be started next week includes running cable for security technology, field verification for lighting and electrical work and D.A. Dodd, the company awarded the plumbing bid, will begin work on the gas line. She said a meeting will also be held with NIPSCO representatives to discuss rebates.
Zupin added that the pool will begin shutting down on April 30th and there will be limited access to the JR/SR High Media Center starting May 7th.

North Judson-San Pierre to Host 2nd Annual Blue Jay Show Case Tomorrow, Residents Invited to Share Their Stories

North Judson-San Pierre will be hosting the second annual Blue Jay Showcase during Friday night’s girls’ basketball game versus Triton at the Jr/Sr High School.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin invites all community members to come out and see the various things that NJSP students have been working on this year.
“It’s an opportunity for our students and teachers to display or demonstrate student work and programs.” Zupin explained, “So in the cafeteria, during the ball game, we will have just a variety of student work and programs.”
Dr. Zupin said work from students of various ages will be featured. Patrons will have a chance to see artwork and demonstrations and displays from students who specialize in woodworking, nutrition and agriculture, as well as demonstrations from elementary students involved in the robotics program.
The Blue Jay Showcase will be run tomorrow from 5:30 p.m. until halftime of the varsity game. Zupin added that the choir will be singing the national anthem at the game as a way to showcase their talents.
Additionally, this year, an area will be set up in the atrium, near the concession stand, in order to generate excitement about a video that will be made this spring.
The superintendent said, “NJSP, we are going to work on creating a video, to celebrate the pride and the history of our school communities”
She said they’re looking to gather information from the past and they wish to include the histories of the North Judson and the San Pierre schools when they were two separate entities.
Superintendent Zupin invited all former students and faculty to attend and tell their stories or show any artifacts or memorabilia that could help share the history of North Judson-San Pierre.

Repairs to North Judson-San Pierre Pool Continue

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that planned renovations to the school’s swimming area will still be done in the spring as planned but they must deal with an unforeseen issue first.
Dr. Zupin stated that Maintenance Director Wilbur Collins noticed something wrong with the pool that required an immediate repair.
“The main drain boxes are really corroded.” Zupin said, “They corroded and that was what was allowing the dirt and the water to get into the pool which is what Mr. Collins saw with discoloration, so we needed to replace the main drain boxes.”
The superintendent said that workers with the company Buddenbaum & Moore Commercial Pool Services had to cut along the whole width of the pool in order to replace the corroded boxes. She said the boxes have been put in and the piping has been set but now they have to re-tile. Once the re-tiling is complete, there is a cure period of about 28 to 30 days.
In the meanwhile, Dr. Zupin said that Knox Schools have been allowing the North Judson-San Pierre swim teams to utilize their facility for practices. She said they are very grateful to the neighboring school corporation for allowing students to use that pool while theirs is being repaired.
After the repair is completed, Dr. Zupin said they will go through with the planned renovation which includes updating temperature control and de-humidification in the pool area. That project is planned to commence this spring and work will be done over the summer so it can be completed by next school year.
The pool-area renovations are a part of this year’s lease rental bond projects while the pool repair is being covered by left over construction money from general obligation bonds issued last year.

N.J.-S.P. School Bus Drivers Set to Receive Raises

North Judson-San Pierre School bus drivers will be receiving raises following a decision to approve the transportation salary schedule made by the school board during a meeting earlier this week. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said bus drivers have been working hard to familiarize themselves with new transportation software and recently reduced routes.She told the board, “We have reduced the routes by two, we are down to 17 routes this year and our bus drivers have not received a raise in quite some time.”
The new software which was approved by the board in December of last year, is used to assess routes for efficiency. While addressing the transportation salary schedule, Dr. Zupin personally thanked Cafeteria Treasurer Nancy Hubbard and Transportation Director Wilbur Collins for their dedicated work with the Transfinder system.

N.J.-S.P. School Board to Conduct 1028 Public Hearing on Proposed Bond Issue Tonight

The next step in the proposed North Judson-San Pierre School renovations is a public hearing during a special-called meeting tonight.
The school board will conduct the statutory 1028 Public Hearing and pass an the necessary resolutions to move the project forward during their 7 p.m. meeting at the central office.
Officials previously outlined an estimated $5.5 million worth of projects designed to make the three buildings safer and more energy efficient. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin says the work will not affect property taxes, as it can be done within the corporation’s existing debt service.
The most extensive work is planned at the high school, which is where 7th through 12th grade classes are currently taking place. Roof repairs, tuckpointing of exterior brick, restroom partitions, new carpet, modernizing the main staircase to comply with current building codes and a new welding hood are all on the list.
So are duct cleaning, if necessary, along with temperature control and HVAC updates, a new backup generator, motion detector lighting, upgrades from fluorescent to LED lighting systems and a replacement water heater.
The board also agreed to make updates to the swimming pool and tennis courts. Other exterior projects include sidewalk repairs, a new pressbox and dugouts for the baseball and softball fields and a new roof for the football locker room.
The board can pay off the bonds for the work in seven years and still have some borrowing capacity should another need arise.

Informational Website Launched for N.J.-S.P. School Referendum

Voters who live within the North Judson-San Pierre School District can learn more about the corporation’s proposed general fund referendum by visiting a new website. www.njspfundourfuture.com explains the rationale behind the push for a property tax increase. Corporation officials say it’s necessary due to what they’ve described as a perfect storm of declining enrollment and changes in the way the state funds schools. Without it, they say significant, painful cuts will need to be made to programs and personnel.
The proposal would raise property taxes by $0.475 per $100 of assessed value in 2016. From 2017-2022 the referendum property tax rate drops to $0.277 per $100 of assessed value. If additional money is needed after 2022, voters will again be asked to consider a referendum.
All voters who live within the school corporation limits are eligible to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. That includes all residents of Wayne, Jackson and Railroad Townships in Starke County as well as California Township Precinct 2 and Rich Grove and Cass Townships in Pulaski County. N.J.-S.P. Officials Prepare for School Funding Referendum

North Judson-San Pierre School officials are preparing to
ask taxpayers within the corporation to support a $1.5 million tax increase
over the next seven years to fund school operations. The school board will
formally authorize the process during their July meeting.
Last night they hosted a town hall “preparing for a
referendum” forum to outline what Superintendent Lynn Johnson calls the
“perfect storm” of state budget cuts and declining enrollment. General fund
revenue has decreased by $1.8 million since 2010, with additional decreases of
$300,000 per year expected in 2016 and 2017, for a total funding loss of $2.5
million, according to Johnson. Since 2010, N.J.-S.P. has also lost 352
students.
Board members have been working with CPA Curt Pletcher from
Umbaugh and Associates to decide how much money they need to replenish their
general fund. They’ve decided to seek a $1.5 million tax increase. Business
Manager and Treasurer Guy Richie says this includes a bit of a funding cushion.
If voters approve, it will sunset after seven years. Taxes would be higher
during the first year but would decline after the corporation pays off an
existing debt service loan. The initial proposed rate of 47.5 cents per $100 of
assessed value would drop by 20-cents in years two through seven.
Pletcher ran the numbers last night and said a homeowner
whose primary residence is valued at $100,000 would pay an additional $155
during the first year and $92 per year in subsequent years. Those numbers
factor in things like homestead tax credits. Owners of agricultural land would
see an average first-year increase of $9.63 per acre, which would drop to $5.65
until the tax sunsets. Rental and commercial property owners would pay an
additional $475 the first year, based on a value of $100,000. That number would
drop to $277 after that.
Pletcher stresses this is the maximum rate and cannot go up
without being brought before the voters again. After seven years voters will
have to approve an extension. If they don’t, taxes will go back down.
Johnson says money from the tax increase would be used to
pay for general fund expenses like vocational education, credit recovery,
classroom audio/visual media needs, and supplies, which would in turn free
money for teacher salaries. They make up the majority of the corporation’s
general fund expenses. She adds further cuts aren’t a viable option, as
increasing class sizes and eliminating programs will only drive more students
away.
