The Starke County Commissioners continued a discussion of the potential acquisition of the Knox Moose Family Center building in downtown Knox.
The Starke County Council members, in a joint meeting with the commissioners, agreed in July to get two appraisals on the building to see what it is worth. They approved funding not to exceed $1,000 per appraisal.
Last week, Commissioner Bryan Cavendar said they don’t have appraisals yet because they will cost $3,800 per appraisal to conduct.
The purchase price of the building is listed at $119,000, but the price could come down to about $80,000. However, the roof would need to be replaced at a cost of $51,000.
It was during that July meeting when government leaders discussed uses for the building, including storage and office space. A recommendation was made to tear down the building to create more parking for the courthouse.
Commission President Charlie Chesak said he’s worried about spending all of that money to make all of the necessary repairs. Commissioner Kathy Norem agreed.
Discussion will continue during the next meeting on Monday, Aug. 19.

Starke County Council Continues Discussion on Knox Moose Family Center Building

The Starke County Council members and Starke County Commissioners are still considering the acquisition of the Knox Moose Family Center Building at 115 N. Main Street.
Councilman Don White and Commissioner Bryan Cavendar toured the building two weeks ago. White said they noticed a few issues.
“We noticed there’s a lot of leakage through the roof and things like that,” said White. “Other than that, the building seemed to be in fairly decent shape. The roof did have an issue.”
An estimate received to replace the flat, rubber roof on the building is about $51,900. If the county were to move forward with obtaining the property, a different roofing configuration would be constructed to extend the life, create better insulation and cut costs on repairs.
The furnace would need to be replaced as well.
The purchase price of the building is $119,000.

Starke County Council, Commissioners Discuss SYSCO Property, Moose Building

Starke County officials took up a discussion concerning the possible acquisition of the SYSCO property in Hamlet and the Knox Moose Family Center Monday night.
Council President Dave Pearman said nothing is concrete at this time. It was suggested by Starke County Commissioner Kathy Norem to form a committee to consider various funding options available to the county.
One thing the committee members could do is review two certified appraisals for the property. The county cannot pay the asking price for the property and the county cannot pay more than the average of the two appraisals received, as explained by Norem.
Commission President Charlie Chesak and Starke County Council President Dave Pearman offered to be on that committee to move forward with discussion points for the possible acquisition of the SYSCO property. If acquired, the county could possibly divide the parcels for potential economic development.
In addition, a committee will be formed to look into acquiring the Knox Moose Family Center. Again, two certified appraisals would need to be obtained for the committee members to review and move forward. Commissioner Bryan Cavendar and Councilman Don White will serve on that committee.
The county could use the building for storage or office space, but no formal decision was made Monday night.
More information will be presented in a future meeting. A special meeting could convene with a recommendation, if needed.

Knox Moose Family Center Bazaar Taking Reservations
