Hunter Education Class Scheduled in Starke County

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is hosting a hunter education class in Starke County. It’s scheduled Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area Headquarters in North Judson from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. CDT.

Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986 is required to take a hunter safety class before they can purchase a hunting license.

The class is open to hunters of all ages. Those under age 12 must be accompanies by an adult. Participants must complete both sessions in order to become certified. Instructors will teach safe firearm use and handling while hunting and in the home, hunter ethics and responsibility, game identification and conservation management.

Hunter Education Classes Offered

Indiana Conservation Officers and volunteer Hunter Education Instructors are offering several Hunter Education classes in Northwest Indiana prior to the start of the 2016 Spring Turkey Season. The Youth Turkey Season is April 23rd and 24thand the regular Spring Turkey Season is April 27th through May 15th.

Indiana Hunter Education Courses will provide instruction in the areas of safe firearm use and handling while hunting, as well as in the home, hunter ethics and responsibility, game identification, and conservation management. Anyone born after December 31, 1986 is required to be certified in Hunter Education before they can purchase a hunting license.

Hunter Education Classes are being offered in Cedar Lake, Fish Lake, Hammond, North Judson, Portage, and Valparaiso. For dates and details regarding these classes, please visit www.register-ed.com to view events near you.

Hunter Education classes fill up fast and you are encouraged to register online prior to start of the class. You are required to attend the entire class in order to take and pass the test.

This course will provide you with the opportunity to learn in a hands-on safe environment the skills necessary to begin to hunt wild turkey in Indiana. This course will be a three part series. The sessions will focus on the following fundamentals: laws and regulations, firearms and safety, locating a hunting spot and knowing where to set, field dressing your harvest, handling and preparing your harvest for the table, and wrap-up with review of information covered. Each session will include an opportunity to sample wild turkey recipes from your instructors, as well as get your hands on the variety of gear and resources available to hunters today. Sessions will be held at different local sites. Participants are asked to participant in all sessions. 

Participants must be a new hunter. All equipment will be provided. 

• Sat., March 15, 12-3 pm - Session 1: History of wild turkey hunting in Indiana and rules and regulations. 
• Thurs., March 20, 6-9 pm - Session 2: At the shooting range: safety and sighting in your gun, shot placement and shoot, don’t shoot scenarios 
• Thurs., March 27, 6-9 pm - Session 3: turkey sign, field set-up, introduction to equipment.

10/5 & 6/2013 Two Day Indiana Hunter Education Course

Indiana Conservation Officers are offering at Hunter Education Class on Saturday October 5 & Sunday October 6, 2013. The course will be held from 9am to 3pm CDT at the Kankakee FWA Headquarters at 4320 W. Toto Rd., North Judson. Attendance both days is mandatory and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a sack lunch. Information only at 219-879-5710.

There is no fee for this course.  Indiana Hunter Education Courses will provide instruction in the areas of safe firearm use and handling while hunting, as well as in the home, hunter ethics and responsibility, game identification, and conservation management.  Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive their Indiana Hunter Education Certification which is required for any hunters born after Dec. 31, 1986.  Students are required to preregister for the course by visiting www.indianahuntereducation.com

About the Class
Hunter Education classes are offered by knowledgeable and dedicated volunteer instructors and Indiana Conservation Officers.

The Classroom Course must include a minimum of 10 hours of instruction. Most classes offered are 1 to 3 sessions. In order to be certified, students must attend the entire class including all sessions.

Age-Related Information
We do not prevent attendance based on age; however:

• Any child under 11 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian every session.
• At the first session, everyone under 18 years of age must give the instructor a signed, completed Liability Release Form (download, print, and sign). This form must have the parent or guardian's signature.
