NIPSCO Lowers Requested Gas Rate Increase, Citing Federal Tax Reform

NIPSCO gas bills would still go up but not by quite as much, under an updated request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The company says residential gas customers now paying $50 per month could expect to see their monthly bill increase to $58.10, rather than $59.80, as originally proposed.

NIPSCO says the original proposal was made back in September and is four months into a review process. Company officials expect a decision from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission during the second half of 2018.

They say the lower increase is due to the federal tax reform. Similar adjustments to electric rates are also being considered, according to NIPSCO.

NIPSCO Submits IRP Plan, Recommends Coal-Power Slowdown

NIPSCO this week submitted their plans to continue providing energy to its customers to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

The plan is required to show just how the utility service provider will be supplying energy over the next 20 years or so. The plan often addresses changing consumer habits, population and business development, and projected energy demand.

The process is conducted every two years by NIPSCO and involves meetings with the public and environmental organizations. Months of analysis is conducted by NIPSCO to ensure their projections meet standards.

Since August, officials with NIPSCO have concluded that they will be ceasing energy production at four of its seven coal-fired power plants. The company says they will provide ongoing work opportunities for the employees at the coal plants as they begin ceasing production.

The impact of this will likely be seen in Porter County and in Wheatfield at the Bailly and R.M. Schahfer Generating Station between 2018 and 2023.

Due to the relatively low prices of natural gas, NIPSCO says its energy portfolio is already shifting away from the use of coal. Currently NIPSCO operates three coal-fired generating stations, one natural gas, two hydroelectric facilities, and purchased wind power.

NIPSCO Rate Hike Approved

Electric rates will be going up for NIPSCO customers this October. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has approved the rate hike, following an agreement reached in February involving NIPSCO, the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, and other groups.

In a press release, NIPSCO says typical residential customers will see their monthly bill go up by about $5.70, or roughly six percent. Rates for most commercial and smaller industrial customers will increase by about five to six percent, but will vary depending on usage patterns.

NIPSCO says the rate increase is about half of what it originally requested. The company believes it’s needed, in order to cover increased maintenance and operating costs, as well as infrastructure upgrades.

The last time base electric rates were changed was in 2011, according to NIPSCO. The company says it’s made several upgrades since then, including reducing the amount of time customers spend without power by 40 percent and upgrading customers’ meters to allow for more accurate billing.
