BMV Extends Hours for Primary Election Day

Posted on May 3, 2018
Author Jacque Ryan, WKVI

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will be holding extended hours of operation next week in order to issue ID cards and driver’s licenses which will be required at polling places on Primary Election Day. Offices will be open 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, May 7th and from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8th.

As required by state law, branches will only process new, amended or replacement ID cards, driver’s licenses and learner permits. Customers who are required to take knowledge or driving skills exam to obtain or renew a license may choose to apply for a free ID card to use for voting purposes.

The Indiana BMV provides free, state-issued ID cards for voting purposes to any unlicensed Hoosier who is a U.S. citizen. To receive one, individuals must be able to provide proper documentation and be at least 18-years-old on or before the next general or municipal election.

BMV officials report that individuals who hold a driver’s license or ID card that expired after the last general election may still use that card as identification for voting purposes. They say that it is also acceptable to utilize the paper interim credential that is issued at the license branch at the time of a transaction or after a customer has completed an internet credential transaction.

The documents that are required in order to obtain a new state ID card or driver’s license can be found below:

  • Proof of identity document, such as a birth certificate or passport
  • Proof of Social Security document, such as a W-2, pay stub or Social Security Card
  • Proof of lawful status, such as a birth certificate or passport
  • Two documents that show proof of residency, such as voter registration card, utility bill or bank statement

Motor Driven Cycle Laws Take Effect Soon

Published: December 31, 2014
By: Tyler Maffitt, WKVI

New laws for mopeds and scooters will take effect on January 1st in Indiana.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says the legislation for Motor Driven Cycles, as they’re called, requires owners to obtain a license endorsement and register the vehicles.

According to a press release, two different classes of license can be obtained to be in compliance when operating the devices.

Deputy Commissioner of Communications Josh Gillespie says the law requires registering the vehicle, and that can make things easier for both law enforcement and the vehicle owner.

“Part of the reason that this law exists is because there has been, especially with these vehicles, a rash of stolen vehicles over the years, and it’s made it very difficult for police and other law enforcement to track these vehicles down,” says Gillespie.

The legislation, House Bill 1342, was signed into law by Governor Mike Pence this year after slim approval in the state Senate.

Individuals who are 15-years of age or older, do not already have a valid state driver’s license, and who intend to drive on public roads are eligible to obtain a Class B endorsement.

After one of the problems received debate in Indianapolis, Gillespie says the law still allows people with suspended licenses to get around.

“You don’t necessarily need to have a valid driver’s license or a valid learner’s permit. Now it is a requirement to have those to drive them, but you can also have a valid identification card with a Motor Driven Cycle Endorsement,” says Gillespie.

Because BMV branches will be closed on New Year’s Day, MDC owners can begin registering their scooter or moped on Friday.

Some MDC drivers may need time to register their device, so the Indiana State Police will limit enforcement to warnings throughout January.

Traffic tickets will be issued in February.

BMV Mails Excise Tax Refund Notices

Published: October 9, 2014
By: Mary Perren, WKVI

Some Hoosiers who have registered vehicles with the state will be getting excise tax refund notices in the mail from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles within the next 30 days. The refunds date back to 2004 and are estimated at $29 million plus interest.

About 180,000 Hoosiers are entitled to refunds. That number represents 3.5 percent of those who registered vehicles over the past decade. BMV Commissioner Don Snemis says the agency will use all reasonable measures to locate everyone entitled to a refund, including follow-up mailings and the use of a national database to locate individuals who may no longer live in the state. He says the BMV is also developing a website to allow anyone entitled to a refund to print a claim form. The agency will also work with the attorney general’s office and turn a list of those entitled to refunds over to the Indiana Unclaimed Property program.

Snemis adds the BMV has also reorganized responsibilities for monitoring and supervising tax and fee collections and making sure they are consistent with state law.
