A newer vehicle will be a part of the Starke County EMS fleet as a non-ALS transport vehicle.
EMS Director Travis Clary said the newer vehicle would be able to handle all of the equipment needed with more ease.
Clary presented the commissioners with a quote Monday night for a 2013 Ford Explorer with 80,000 miles and all-wheel drive at a purchase price of $11,000. A $3,000 trade-in value was quoted for the current 2011 Dodge Charger used as the non-ALS transport vehicle.
The vehicle would come from Chicago Motors, a company that sells pre-owned government discounted vehicles and that has been used by other county officials to purchase vehicles.
Clary said the best part of the deal is that enough grant money has been obtained for the purchase of the vehicle with no additional funding needed. Grant funds were obtained through Starke United and the Starke County Community Foundation from the Hardesty Memorial for this purchase.
Auditor Rachel Oesterreich asked about the IT vehicle and Emergency Management Agency vehicle, both of which are in much more worse condition than Clary’s vehicle he’s trading in. With the trade-in value, they could trade-in the IT vehicle or Emergency Management Agency vehicle and the commissioners would pay the difference. The IT or Emergency Management Agency department would then use the 2011 Dodge Charger.
Commissioner Bryan Cavendar made a motion to approve the purchase of the EMS vehicle with the grant money and then pay the difference of the trade-in value of the IT or Emergency Management Agency vehicle out of the Cumulative Capital Development Fund.

Emergency Response Vehicles Delivering Food and Clean-Up Kits Around Indiana
Posted on March 1, 2018
Author Jacque Ryan, WKVI
On Wednesday, Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles started delivering food and supplies to flood-affected areas around Indiana, including the counties of Marshall, Starke and Pulaski.
Lead Disaster Action Team Member and Local Red Cross Volunteer Sherry Fagner spent the beginning of this week working with the Mass Care Feeding League at Red Cross Headquarters in South Bend, organizing contracts with areas requesting assistance and preparing kits to deliver to the spots that were hit the hardest by the recent floods.
“They’ll be going to the local communities, any of the flooded areas but I know most of them are along the river.” Fagner explained, “We’ll be distributing, along with meals, we have snacks and bottled waters but we also will be doing some bulk distribution on the same route that will include clean-up kits.”
Red Cross reports that as more impacted areas become accessible, volunteers will continue to provide comfort, care and support for immediate needs. Those in need of assistance are asked to call their local Emergency Management Agency or the Red Cross can be contacted directly at 1-888-684-1441.

Starke County Commissioners Terminate EMA Director
Posted on May 16, 2017

The Starke County Commissioners are looking to hire a couple of department heads. They voted last night to terminate Emergency Management Agency Director Jacob Lippner, after being advised by the EMA Advisory Board that they have the authority to do so.
President of the Commissioners Don Binkley said the position was not a good fit for the county or for Lippner but did not elaborate.
The commissioners had tasked Lippner with oversight of the county’s radio system for emergency responders in addition to his state-mandated preparedness and response duties.
Until his replacement is hired, Starke County EMS Office Manager Marylynn Richie will handle EMA communications, and Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 2 Coordinator Ted Bombagetti will assist the county should an emergency occur.
Binkley says no timeline has been set to hire a new EMA director. Applications can be submitted to the commissioners in care of the auditor’s office.
The commissioners are also looking to hire an information technology director for the county. Brian Pinson has submitted his resignation but will still be working for another couple of weeks. Applications for that position can also be submitted to the commissioners in care of the auditor’s office.

Recent Storms Prompt Requests for Damage Reports
Posted on August 19, 2016

Recent storms have prompted the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to remind individuals they may report uninsured damage online.
Northern Indiana was pummeled with rain earlier this week, causing flooding, road closures, and rising streams and rivers.
According to the IDHS, the page provided through their website at www.dhs.in.gov will compile damage reports that will be used to help local Emergency Management Agency departments determine whether they should pursue federal disaster assistance or loans. The damage reports will fall under the August 15th and continuing category.
The DHS says losses often include structural damage to homes and loss of personal property.
Additionally local emergency management agencies ask that residents who sustained damages contact their offices. They are gathering information to see whether the county meets the threshold requirements to apply for state or federal disaster assistance. Officials note reporting damage is not a guarantee of assistance. It is simply the first step in the process of determining whether assistance can be pursued.
