The Starke County Commissioners took action this week to approve a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Darla Cook, representing the directors of the Coaltion Against Domestic Abuse of Starke County, presented the document to the commissioners that discussed how domestic abuse affects the entire community.
Commissioner Kathy Norem read aloud from the proclamation.
“…Whereas we live in a world where 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 7 men are victims of domestic violence. ….Whereas domestic violence is not a private issue. The harmful effects of domestic violence are far reaching. They’re undermining justice and safety in all areas of our society,” said Norem.
The document also noted that Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an opportunity for citizens to connect with those who work to end violence.

Starke County Commissioners Sign Domestic Violence Awareness Proclamation

The Starke County Commissioners unanimously approved their signatures on a document proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Commissioner Kathy Norem read aloud from the proclamation that noted three women a day are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the United States and one in four women and one in 13 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. It also stated that children who grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused and neglected at a rate higher than the national average.
Annette Ohman-Van Schoyck from the Starke County Coalition Against Domestic Abuse said different exhibits will be available at each of the libraries in Starke County in order to educate residents on the impacts of domestic abuse.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence affects one in four women at some point her lifetime. Three women are killed every day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pulaski County Prosecutor Dan Murphy and Chief Deputy Prosecutor Kelly Gaumer note that changes in economic circumstances or stress can have a devastating effect on relationships. Domestic violence can be emotional, financial, physical, or sexual.
Murphy said it’s important to recognize the signs of domestic violence and to consider what actions to take.
They urge anyone suffering from domestic violence to call 911 or the Indiana Coalition against Domestic Violence hotline at 1-800-332-7385.
