Don’t Forget to “Spring Forward” This Sunday

Posted on March 9, 2019
Author Jacque Ryan, WKVI

It’s that time of your again; daylight saving time will soon require everyone to spring forward an hour.

Citizens are reminded that daylight saving time starts tomorrow on Sunday March 10th. That means that when local standard time is about to reach 2 a.m. clocks must be turned forward 1 hour to read 3 a.m. daylight time instead.

Don’t stress about doing the switch right at 2 a.m. If you end up sleeping through the time change, just remember your clocks will technically be an hour behind when you wake up and make the necessary adjustment.

Most electronics do this automatically, however, some car radios, oven clocks and other items will need to be adjusted manually.

Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday

Author Michael Gallenberger, WKVI

Get ready to “fall back” this weekend. Daylight Saving Time officially ends Sunday at 2:00 a.m. That means clocks should be moved back one hour before going to bed on Saturday.

It’s also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Officials remind residents to test smoke alarms every month, remove any dust from the front of them, and replace alarms that are more than 10 years old.

More fire safety tips can be found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security website.

Get ready to “spring forward.” Daylight Saving Time officially begins Sunday at 2:00 a.m. That means clocks should be moved forward one hour before going to bed on Saturday.

It’s also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarm and make sure it’s working properly. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security also reminds residents to check their smoke alarms’ manufacture date. If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s time for a new one.

Having working smoke alarms doubles your chance of surviving a house fire, according to the National Fire Protection Association. More fire safety tips can be found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security website.

Residents Reminded to ‘Turn and Test’ This Weekend

Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday morning at 2:00. That means clocks need to be turned forward by an hour Saturday night.
The American Red Cross is also encouraging residents to “turn and test” this weekend. They say in addition to turning clocks forward, residents should also test their home’s smoke alarms.
Batteries should be changed once a year or according to their manufacturer’s instructions, and the alarms should ideally be checked every month. The Red Cross says smoke alarms should be installed on every level of a home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross and its partners have assisted 226 people and installed 145 free smoke alarms across Northern Indiana since last summer.
They also say it’s important to develop a fire escape plan with two ways to get out of every room and a meeting place away from the home.

By: Anita Goodan, WKVI

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 8 at 2 a.m. local time. Before you go to bed on March 7, make sure that you set your clock ahead one hour or move it ahead one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal encourages residents to change the batteries in smoke detectors when the time is changed. It serves as a reminder to make sure fresh batteries are installed as they should be changed twice a year.

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, and one should be inside each bedroom and outside of each sleeping area.
