The Hive, a local ladies giving circle established through the Starke County Community Foundation, helped provide a platform and funding to four amazing causes during their second annual Social Gathering at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center Wednesday evening.
Drew’s Gift of Music and The Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation will each receive a $750 grant, The Koontz Lake/Oregon-Township Volunteer Fire Department will be getting $1,500 and the Hope Restored Recovery Home will be awarded a grant of $2,000.
Each group had a chance to speak about their organization and discuss how the funding was going to assist their cause. The amount of grant funding was determined by how many votes the various organizations gathered from Hive members.
Representatives of the Hope Restored Recovery Home Steve Purtha and Megan Johnston talked about the need for accessible addiction treatment in the community.
Their grant money will be spent on construction supplies for the facility being built on Lane Street in North Judson. Their anticipated date of completion is fall of this year.
Koontz Lake/Oregon-Township Volunteer Fire Department Captain Kyle Hinds explained that a lot of the funding the department receives comes directly from fundraising and the firefighters themselves.
He said their money will go toward purchasing medical supplies as well as a new rescue saw.
Drew’s Gift of Music Founder Deb Johnson discussed how their charity was established in memory of her son, former Knox High School Drum Major Drew Shearin. She said they’ll be using their money to expand their reach in the community to get instruments in the hands of even more students.
She also emphasized a new program they started at Knox Schools called Music Reycled where the organization pays for one student to get professional lessons and then they teach 10 more students what they learned.
Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation Founder Harold Welter highlighted the giving spirit of his daughter who passed away in 2000.
He emphasized that in 2018 they were able to provide 17 grants that made a difference in the lives of teachers and students all across Starke County. The funding provided by the Hive will be used to continue their mission of helping local educators and underprivileged children.
In addition to spotlighting those charitable organizations, some officials from the ladies giving circle spoke as well. SCCF Director of Development and Hive Founder Jessi Martinovic and Hive Chairwoman Andrea Cox started the event out by sharing a bit about the organization and past grant recipients.
Northern Indiana Community Foundation Associate Director Corinne Becknell Lucas also took to the podium.
She highlighted how a portion of the dues collected from the Hive members goes to fund the annual grants and how another part is set aside in an endowment fund.
She also shared a recent development that will bring more funds into The Hive to help fund future projects.
She explained, “We are pleased to announce that the Starke County Legacy of Women, a former giving circle of the Starke County Community Foundation, has agreed to move their endowment dollars into the Hive Giving Circle.”
A powerful presentation from ‘The Giving Gal’ Stephanie Jones was another element of the event. She spoke about the importance of giving and living a grateful life.

Knox Community Schools Partner With Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation

Harold Welter approached the Knox School Board Tuesday night to discuss how the charitable foundation that was created in memory of his daughter could be a helpful resource to the school corporation. The Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation was formed in order to assist underprivileged students in grades K-12 with expenses that are beyond what their families are able to afford.
Knox School Board members permitted the principals at each of the buildings to work with the Cheryl Lyn Foundation to process grants that would be provided to disadvantaged students at the elementary, middle and high schools.
Knox was just the first school board that Welter approached. He made plans to speak to the Eastern Pulaski School board in November and is meeting with the superintendent at North Judson-San Pierre later this week to arrange to be put on the agenda for their next board meeting.
Over the next 6-8 weeks Welter wants to reach all 9 schools in the Kankakee Valley area. He is hoping that by early 2018, grants from the foundation can start being awarded to students in need.

Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Foundation Receives 2017 Advisor Charitable Leadership Award

Seventeen years ago, the Knox community collectively grieved the loss of Cheryl Lyn Welter, a dedicated and involved senior at KHS who tragically lost her life in an automobile accident the day before Homecoming.
Today, Cheryl is still making a difference by impacting the lives of underprivileged school children thanks to the efforts of her family. The Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation was established back in March to raise money to assist local school children in grades K-12 with various expenses that are out of their reach.
Her father and longtime WKVI radio personality and sports commentator Harold Welter described the foundation’s mission to be in character with the kind of thing Cheryl would have liked to do. He elaborated, “She was a people person and she, as a matter of fact, had been accepted at the Purdue University School of Child and Family Counseling so she was going to make a career out of helping people.”
Welter said there are countless scholarships out there for students heading off to college, in fact there is even a scholarship offered in Cheryl’s honor. However, he felt there wasn’t an organized effort in place to assist underprivileged students in younger grades. This foundation was established to help cover the cost of things like field trips, special events and other expenses a student’s family may not be able to afford.
Later this month, Harold will be speaking on behalf of the foundation, accepting the 2017 Advisor Charitable Leadership Award which his firm, Financial Partners of Knox, received after submitting Cheryl’s story for consideration. The award is given by the broker-dealer Sigma Financial to individuals who display a commitment to community involvement. The firm will receive a personalized trophy as well as a significant sum of money to put into the foundation.
When the foundation was established, an endowment was set up with a goal of $100,000. About $25,000 has been raised so far. Welter said they’re hoping to reach their goal by Cheryl’s birthday which is November 5th.
Money has been raised over the last few months through the generous community donations contributed during WKVI morning shows and online contributions. Currently, a family friend, Helen Guriel is raising money raffling off tickets for a lovely hand stitched quilt she created in Cheryl’s honor. Individuals also have the opportunity to become fundraisers themselves. Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Foundation Launches

A local family is honoring the memory of their late daughter by giving back to school-age children throughout the Kankakee Valley. WKVI sports legend Harold Welter announced the establishment of the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation during a Monday appearance on “Grossman in the Morning.” He says it represents a major commitment to helping underprivileged children in our local schools.
“It’s a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization with an endowment from which grants are going to be issued to help underprivileged kids in grades K to 12 with expenses which may be out of their reach. Our initial goal in this is to have $100,000 in the endowment to begin awarding grants,” Welter said.
The foundation’s namesake, Cheryl Lyn Welter, was a senior at Knox High School when she was killed in a car accident on Oct. 12, 2000.
“Her dream was always to help others. She had been accepted at Purdue University in the family counseling department. That was going to be her major. We’re basically asking people to help us carry on her dream,” Welter added.
The foundation will award grants to teachers throughout the area to help students who need an extra financial boost.
“A lot of local kids can’t even afford little things like field trips or school supplies or practice packs for athletes. Through the endowment we’re going to be able to help kids with those immediate needs that are geared to specific purposes. Teachers will be coming to us and applying for these grants.”
The foundation is working to build an endowment of $100,000 to ensure its work can carry on for generations to come. Interest from the fund will be used to fund the grants, with a goal of awarding the first one before the end of this school year. Cheryl’s Family has established the “Cheryl Lyn Welter Charitable Family Foundation”, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization with an endowment from which grants will be issued to help underprivileged kids in grades K-12 with expenses which may be out of their reach.
Our initial goal is to have $100,000 in the endowment in order to begin awarding grants.
Our daughter Cheryl was killed in an auto accident on October 12, 2000, when she was a Senior at Knox High School. Cheryl’s dream was always to help others, and, to that end, she had been accepted at Purdue University as a Family Counseling major. Now, we’re asking you to help us carry on her dream of helping families, and, in particular, children of families with limited financial means!
Many local kids can’t afford even simple things like field trips, school supplies or practice packs for sports. Through the endowment, we will be able to help kids with immediate needs through grants geared to specific purposes as outlined by teachers, coaches and others involved with these children.
