Starke County Economic Development Foundation Reviews This Year’s Manufacturers Day Event

Almost 400 middle and high school students took part in the Starke County Economic Development Foundation’s Manufacturers Day events last week. That’s according to Special Projects Coordinator Ron Gifford.

He told the Hamlet Town Council Wednesday that more than 330 seventh graders had the chance to meet with 14 manufacturers and the SCILL Center during the main event last Thursday. “So they could ask questions of people to find out what kind of jobs they have, what kind of education is needed in order to get a job there,” Gifford said. “They have time at each booth.”

Gifford added that high school seniors were able to attend a career fair the night before. “Last year, we tried to mix seniors with seventh graders and the employers said ‘That doesn’t work. We’re trying to make too many elevator pitches to two different constituencies, and it didn’t work,'” he explained. “So we tried to move them into the night before the regular Manufacturing Day event, and we had about 60, pretty much all seniors in high school, show up from various communities. So it was fairly successful.”

Last week’s activities also included the foundation’s annual Prospectus and Achievement Luncheon. Gifford said those in attendance got to hear from a guest speaker from Kemin Industries. “Kemin, if you don’t know, is a mint company just south of North Judson on 39,” he said. “They take a particular brand of spearmint that’s grown by the family there. They originally were going to use the product for shelf preservation life on different products all over the world, and they have since found that there is some ingredient in that spearmint that they’re processing that staves off dementia.”

Meanwhile, Alex Weisheit was presented with the foundation’s 2018 Robert E. Hamilton Award.

The Starke County Economic Development Foundation wants to help community members of all ages find a job that’s right for them. That’s why they’re hosting a few different events this week that will highlight a variety of local career options.

Today, WorkOne is teaming up with the SCEDF to host a career fair from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Knox Middle School auxiliary gym. Job seekers are invited to attend this event to find out more about the kind of opportunities that are out there. Attendees are asked to enter through door number five.

A “Career Exploration” event is being held in conjunction with today’s career fair. This is an opportunity for senior students to meet one-on-one with local manufacturing employers who are hiring in order to learn about what they make and find out more about the education and training required for current open positions.

Coincidentally, this year’s senior students were the first 7th graders to attend the inaugural Manufacturers Day six years ago. More than 350 7th grade students are expected to be at this year’s Manufacturers Day event which will be held in the same place tomorrow, on Thursday, October 4th starting at 7:30 a.m.

Students from every school in the county, including Oregon-Davis, North Judson-San Pierre, Culver and Knox Community Schools will be in attendance.

Many area industries, including Callisons, Elkay Manufacturing, Knox Fertilizer, Kruz, Inc., MPI, Toll Integrated Systems, Traffic Control Specialists, White Flyer, and several others, as well as the Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning, a.k.a the SCILL Center, will be present to share information with these students.

Foundation representatives say this event is a wonderful way for local manufacturers to share their story with the community’s future workforce. They also report that it’s a way to help answer the industry’s cries for help in finding workers with proper job skills, while at the same time, connecting students to local employment opportunities as they starting to consider options for the future.

The upcoming Manufacturing Day events in Starke County will be covered in part by a Purdue IN-MaC micro grant.

The grant program is designed to help provide financial support for those businesses and organizations who implement creative projects that enhance youth exposure and experiences to manufacturing in collaboration with Manufacturing Day initiatives. The micro grants support innovation and encourage organizations to dedicate funds toward development and program implementation that impact manufacturing.

The Starke County Economic Development Foundation applied for and was awarded $2,000 to assist with planned events in October.

On Oct. 4, approximately 350 seventh grade students from Knox, North Judson-San Pierre, Oregon-Davis and Culver Community School Corporation will gather at Knox Middle School to learn what each company manufactures, who they sell their products to and for what use, what types of jobs are available in a particular company and what job skills and education are necessary to secure employment at the company. It will be held in conjunction with a Career Fair which will occur on Wednesday, October 3rd from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Knox Middle School Auxiliary Gymnasium.

The Annual Starke County Economic Development Foundation Manufacturers Day is about a month away.

For the last six years, the SCEDF has partnered with the Oregon-Davis, North Judson-San Pierre, Knox and Culver School Corporations to provide this opportunity to middle school students in Starke County.

This year’s Manufactures Day event will be held on Thursday, October 4th. At that time, approximately 350 7th grade students from all four school corporations will gather at Knox Middle School to learn what local companies have to offer.

According to a SCEDF press release, students will venture around to see what each company manufactures, who they sell their products to and for what use, what types of jobs are available in a particular company and what job skills and education are necessary to secure employment at the company.

When the tour concludes, students will receive a “goodie bag” that will include a brochure highlighting SCILL and each of the industries they visited as well as a word search puzzle for the students to complete related to their visit.

During this same week in October, senior students and their parents are invited to attend a “Career Exploration” event. This will be a chance for seniors to meet one-on-one with local manufacturers to explore employment opportunities.

It will be held in conjunction with a Career Fair which will occur on Wednesday, October 3rd from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Knox Middle School Auxiliary Gymnasium. Job seekers are also encouraged to attend the Career Fair. This event is co-sponsored by WorkOne and the SCEDF.

According to SCEDF representatives, they offer these events as a way to answer the industry’s cries for help in finding workers with proper job skills while simultaneously engaging students in the opportunities that are available in their community.
