Starke County Park Board Expresses Concern with Condition of Bass Lake Beach House

The condition of the Bass Lake Beach gate house is once again drawing concerns from the Starke County Park Board. During Tuesday’s meeting, Board Member Butch Gerstandt worried that the structure would fall down.

“They didn’t paint it, and all the wood is falling apart,” Gerstandt said. “And he said they were going to do the other side to make it all match, and they’ve never done any of that.”

The gate house was seriously damaged about two years ago, when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it. At the time, the county’s building inspector said the structure was unsafe and called for its replacement. But the facility’s manager, Larry Clarich, felt that he and some of the campground users could repair it at a lower cost.

The county ended up getting a $2,500 insurance check for the damage, but board members weren’t sure Tuesday whether or not that money was handed over to the site’s operators. Board Member Chris Lawrence wanted to make sure they were held accountable. “If the insurance money came to us and we turned it to them to do the repairs, then we should at least get receipts and have them follow up or buy paint and finish the job,” Lawrence said.

Board members agreed to check their records to see what was done with the money.

Additional Upgrades Planned for Bass Lake Beach Gate House

The Bass Lake Beach gate house may soon be getting some more upgrades. Much of the structure had to be repaired after a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.

Bass Lake Beach and Campground Assistant Manager Larry Clarich told the Starke County Park Board Tuesday he was able to get the gate house back in usable condition by the time the beach opened for the year. Now, he says he wants to redo the other side once the season ends. “I’d like to remove all the bricks and do it the same way we did the other side,” he explained. “It’s going to be very expensive to do all the bricks. I’d like to replace all the windows and make that building so it’s there for the next 30 or 40 years, so that way we don’t have any problems or the county won’t have any issues with it.”

None of the three board members in attendance Tuesday opposed the plan. The county got a $2,500 insurance settlement for the damage.

Meanwhile, the beach house is getting some cosmetic improvements. Clarich said he planned to have his staff power wash the building this week, so they could start repainting it.

Bass Lake Beach Gate House Repairs Underway

Repairs to the Bass Lake Beach gate house have begun. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.

Bass Lake Beach and Campground Assistant Manager Larry Clarich told the Starke County Park Board last week that the building has been pushed back onto its foundation. But he said there’s extensive termite damage on one side and part of the front and back. The front door will also have to be replaced, following last year’s crash.

Park Board President Roger Chaffins said the county received its $2,500 insurance settlement on April 30. A group of local community members and campground users has volunteered to help with repairs.

Clarich said he hoped to get the work done before the Bass Lake Beach officially opens this coming Friday. Until then, he asks members of the public to stay off the beach for their own safety, as various construction projects continue.

Bass Lake Beach Gate House Insurance Settlement Finalized

Repairs to the Bass Lake Beach gate house will soon be able to move ahead. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.

Now, the Starke County Park Board has finalized an insurance settlement for $2,500, according to County Attorney Marty Lucas. “All the paperwork has been filed, and so it’s just a matter of getting the check in now,” he says.

Park Board President Roger Chaffins initially felt that offer was too low, after Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson determined the gate house was unsafe and called for its removal. The cost of replacing it was estimated to be as high as $15,000.

However, Bass Lake Beach and Campground Assistant Manager Larry Clarich felt the building could be repaired, and the $2,500 figure should be enough to cover the cost.

Starke County Park Board Agrees to Compensation Offer for Bass Lake Beach Gate House Damage

The Starke County Park Board is ready to accept an insurance settlement for damage to the Bass Lake Beach gate house. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.

The truck owner’s insurance provider offered the county just over $2,500 in compensation. Starke County Park Board President Roger Chaffins originally felt that amount was too low, after Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson determined the gate house was unsafe and called for its removal.

However, Bass Lake Beach and Campground Assistant Manager Larry Clarich and others disagreed. Clarich told the park board last week that he felt the building could be repaired, and the $2,500 figure should be enough to cover the cost. Based on that recommendation, the park board voted to accept the insurance offer, as long as Stephenson agrees to the plan.

Chaffins suggested that local community members can help with the repairs, after similar efforts were used to save a pavilion that was ordered to be demolished. Clarich said some of the campground users said they’d be willing to help.

Starke County Park Board Seeks Larger Compensation Offer for Bass Lake Beach Gate House Damage

The replacement of the Bass Lake Beach gate house may require some more negotiation. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.

Starke County Park Board President Roger Chaffins says he wants a better offer from the truck owner’s insurance provider. “I’m not too happy with it,” he said. “Basically, they’re just wanting to pay us for the damages to that building after they subtract the rot and the basic wear and tear on the building from years of being there. And they’ve come up with a figure of $2,538.71 to fix that.”

During Tuesday’s park board meeting, Chaffins said the insurance company was ready to give the county a check, but he didn’t want to accept it until County Attorney Marty Lucas could get involved. “My plan is to ask Marty, if you would talk to this guy and see what’s going on with it because I would probably give a few choice cuss words to him, okay? But I haven’t talked to him since February 12 because he just upset me with what he’s got.”

Further complicating matters is the fact that Starke County’s building inspector has found the structure to be unsafe. “Terry Stephenson went out to look at it,” Chaffins explained, “and I’ve got a letter from him and it needs to come down and a new one needs to replace it, is what he stated.”

An estimate from a construction company put the cost of rebuilding the gate house at $15,000.

There have also been questions about whether it could be rebuilt in its current location or if it would have to be moved farther back from State Road 10. Chaffins said he hadn’t gotten a clear answer from INDOT, as of Tuesday’s meeting.
