Betty, Allen Chesak Named As Mint Festival Parade Grand Marshals

Betty and Allen Chesak will serve as Grand Marshals for the 2012 Mint Festival Parade. The North Judson Mint Festival Committee named the two at their recent meeting.

Betty has been involved with the Mint Festival since its beginning 35 years ago. Many of those years she was the Mint Festival President before retiring from the committee in 2010.

Allen is a Starke County farmer. Working with his father Charles, he was involved with mint farming in the early years. The mint farming blended in well with the corn and soybeans also grown on the property.

The Chesaks will ride in the parade on Sunday, June 17.

Friends Book Sale at Mint Festival 2012

Just like last year, the Friends of the North Judson-Wayne Township Library Book Sale will be held in the ultra roomy Bank of Indiana building, kitty-corner to the library. We will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; books (hardbacks & trade paperbacks) @ $1 each; pocketbooks @ .50 cents each; children’s books @ .25 cents each and we will be offering a selection of VHS tapes (priced at $1 each) that the library has discarded. Some of these are well used, some of them barely circulated. Our big “BUCK A BAG” blowout will run from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. All the books you can stuff in a typical grocery bag become your treasures for just $1. VHS tapes will be sold at .50 each.

Mint Festival Activities For Pets

The Starke County Humane Society has planned plenty of activities for your pets at the Mint Festival this year.  For more information you can contact them by calling 574-896-5060 or visiting them at 0104 W. State Road 10, North Judson, Indiana  46366.   

We are searching for this year's Pet Parade Mascot. The Mascot will lead the Pet Parade and also be included in the Big Parade on June 17th. A gift basket will be awarded. Does your pet have a special story ? Please post a photo and your pet's story. All entries must be received by June 11th. If you entered last year, you may enter again this year (excluding last year's winner.)
PET FUN RUN / WALK: JUNE 16th / SaturdayNorth Judson Town Park / Arlowa Lane at the Baseball Field
Registration at 9:30 a.m.
Fun Run/Walk starts at 10:00 a.m.
Entry Fee: $ 10.00 per team ( Handler & Pet )

The 3rd week of May is National Bike Week and National Police Week.

I'm not sure if by Bike they mean bicycles or motorcycles, so be especially nice to motorcycle policemen!

Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher

As part of his national tour, New York based Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher will be presenting a program at the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library at 3:30 p.m. on May 23rd.  Please contact the library at 574-896-2841 before May 22nd to reserve your seat.

His repertoire will include:
          Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring from Cantata No. 147
          the Chaconne in D minor by J. S. Bach
          2 works from Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite;
          Francisco Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra;
          2 compositions by Spanish composer Joaquin Turina;
          Grieg’s Chanson de Solveig from Peer Gynt;
          music of Praetorius, Ponce and Reusner
          and will end with Koyunbaba by composer/guitarist Carlo Domeniconi.

CDs of Mr. Fletcher will be available for purchase at the program.

Piggies & Cream at the Point Opens

Piggies & Cream at the Point officially opened today.  The drive-in will feature home-raised and homemade products form Birky Family Farms including:  Birky's Barbeque, pork burgers, pork poppers, pork tenderloin and homemade chicken tenders. They will also be serving soft-serve and homemade ice cream, shakes, draft root beer and vintage sodas.

Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Historic National Road Yard Sale

Most of us have heard of the 800 mile long yard sale which stretches from Pennsylvania to St. Louis, Illinois. On May 16th at 6:30 p.m. Patricia McDaniel, founding member of the Historic National Road Yard Sale, will be speaking at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library. Not only will she be talking about the creation of the Yard Sale, she will also talk about loaning items from the 40s, 50s, and 60s to be used in Hollywood movies.
