She seems to be very interested in National Gumdrop Day (Feb 15th), Do a Grouch a Favor Day (Feb 16th), and Random Acts of Kindness Day (Feb 17th). Wonder which one she'll choose?

Who doesn't know that February 14th is Valentine's Day? (Especially after all those commercials that you see on TV.) But did you also know that this year February 14th is also Ferris Wheel Day and National Organ Donor Day? So if you haven't purchased a gift just yet, you can always make up a certificate for your sweetie for a ferris wheel ride at the County Fair this summer. And instead of giving a heart shaped box of candy it might be more appropriate to offer them your actual heart; for one of you that would be healthier than the candy.

Anubis was wondering what we would be doing for Saturday's READ Jr. Tale Time. She was very happy when I told her that our subject and craft for the day would be a shadows and groundhogs; but not as happy when she learned the craft would be made of paper, popsicle sticks (without the popsicle), and plastic. Anubis decided she will still be coming in on February 4th for the story hour at 11 a.m.

Stop in and pick up a card, get it stamped by 8 different participating merchants, then bring it back to the library and put it in the drop box for a chance to win $50. The drawing will be held on December 17, 2011.

Retail Merchants will require a purchase before stamping the back of your card; but the North Judson-Wayne Township Library will stamp your card for free.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

But this year it will be on Friday night just before the Christmas tree lighting at 6 p.m.. Santa will arrive in North Judson at 5:45 p.m. and make his way down Lane Street from Sycamore to Main and then on to Norwayne Field. After the tree lighting there will be hot cocoa and cookies served at the fireplace on the top of the hill.

Those of you who have been holding your breath can now breathe - our tiny village has been saved!

And who is the heroine who has rescued the villagers from the mean turkey? None other than Claudia Floyd, whose name was chosen from the basket by one of the children who attended READ Jr. Tail Time on Saturday. Claudia picked up her turkey on Monday and it will be featured at her family's celebration on Thursday.

Thank you to everyone who baked or purchased cookies for the Friends of the Library Cookie Walk. In the short time of 5 hours we sold out and the Friends group made a profit of almost $500. In case you're wondering, the fund raising was part of a long range project by the Friends to help enhance the library's genealogical searches.

GED Classes Back at NJ-WT Library

The North Judson-Wayne Township Library is once again a site for GED classes.

Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration for classes is done on a monthly basis.

Well, the Friends of the North Judson-Wayne Township Library want to help. On Saturday, November 12th, starting at 9 a.m. until they sell out the Friends will have a cookie walk at Bailey’s Discount Center selling cookies by the pound.

You can choose the cookies you like best and then, to avoid temptation, put them in the freezer until Thanksgiving. If you buy enough, you won’t have to worry about Christmas either.

Fun Day Trivia Contest

We received a letter today that the North Judson Park will be doing a Fun Day Trivia Contest.

Date: Sunday April 3rd
Time: 4 p.m.
Place: Grand Central Station
Cost: $10 per person per team (ex: 5 people = $50; 10 people = $100).

This is a team event and there can be up to 10 members on a team. Four or five rounds of ten questions will be asked, each time will submit an answer sheet after team discussions. Prizes will be awarded to the team with the highest score and the team with the lowest score. Also, a traveling trophy will be awarded to the winning team for display in home, office, hall or business until the next contest when they can defend their title as "Fun Day Trivia Champs.

Whooo's that bird?

It was about a year ago this month that Dorothy Hansen donated this stuffed owl, which originally belonged to Lavelle Hansen, to the library. Since that time he has been sitting in a window keeping an eye on things.

Of course it could be a she, I wouldn’t know how to tell the difference. But I’m going to leave that decision up to you in our “Name the Owl” contest. GED Classes 2010

As of September 13th, the North Judson-Wayne Township Library is longer a site for GED classes.

Classes will continue at the Starke County Adult Learning Center located at 6 North Shield Street, Knox, Indiana. There is a $20 registration fee. However, after attending 12 hours of classes all registered students will receive a practice book (a $20 value) free.

A Great Big THANK YOU...

On Thursday, August 19th, Starke County Environmental Management donated a chair - made out of recycled plastic bottles - to the North Judson-Wayne Township Library. We're sure it will be quite a conversation piece and highly desired by the children who visit.

They also left us a recycle container for plastic bottles. Just think, if you bring in your plastic bottles to recycle you will be giving a "hand" to everyone.

Make a Splash at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library: READ

And make a splash they did. From June 28th through August 6th a total of twenty-five children took part in the six week Summer Reading program at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library.

But they didn’t spend all their time reading. Every Wednesday they gathered to Be Creative by making crafts (ie: a beach in a bottle, a rainstick, decorating ducks) or playing games (Make a Splash Bingo, Where’s the Duck?) and listening to stories read by Mrs. Bonnie Halascsak. Needless to say, everyone had a good time. By the time the program ended on August 6th, twelve of the participants had spent at least ten hours reading or being read to over the six week period.

On August 7th we gathered by the ramp of the Civic Center to see who would win bragging rights for winning 1st North Judson-Wayne Township Duck Race, using the ducks they decorated the Wednesday before. After the race everyone went to the library basement where certificates and prizes were passed out; a lunch of hotdogs, nachos, and s’mores was served; and the film “Kermit’s Swamp Years” was enjoyed.

Wednesday Be Creative Meetings End

Today was the last of our Wednesday Be Creative meetings for the Summer Reading program. We were hoping to have some duck races but because of the weather decided not to do any outside activities. Hope for good weather Saturday so we can have the races before we pass out certificates and prizes.

Frank H. Ono, Recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor

As Memorial Day approaches it is fitting to recall a local hero. Frank H. Ono (June 5, 1923 - May 6, 1980) fought in World War II as a member of the 442 Regimental Combat Team. This regiment was made up of Nisei - the American-born sons of Japanese immigrants. Their experiences in the military were similar to those that other races have faced; while they fought the Germans in Europe, they also had to fight prejudice in America.

The 442 Regimental Combat Team trained at Camp Shelby in Mississippi and was composed of “Buddaheads” - Hawaii born Nisei - and “Katonk”- Nisei that had grown up on mainland America. Because Japanese-Americans had not been forcibly “relocated” from their homes, businesses and farms and incarcerated in camps, the “Buddaheads” did not understand the attitude of the “Katonk” toward the government. Once a group of Hawaiians were sent to tour Camp Jerome and Camp Rowher in Arkansas and saw the barbed wire fencing and the rough barracks where families were packed together without privacy the “Buddaheads” understood and gained a new respect for the “Katonks.” As a result the men stopped fighting and united like a clenched fist.

The motto of the 442nd was “Go for Broke”, a gambling term that means to risk everything in one great effort to win big. And the men of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team did just that. It was “the most decorated unit for its size and length of service, in the entire history of the U.S. Military. The 4,000 men who initially came in April 1943 had to be replaced nearly 3.5 times. In total, about 14,000 men served, ultimately earning 9,486 Purple Hearts , 21 Medals of Honor and an unprecedented eight Presidential Unit Citations.”

It took the United States government fifty years to recognize that Nisei soldiers were deserving of the Medal of Honor. On June 21, 2000 President Clinton awarded 22 Asian Americans, 20 of them Japanese American WW II veterans. Thirteen of the medals were given posthumously.

Addicted to Yarn Club

After four months of planning the Addicted to Yarn Club at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library has begun meeting. The club is composed of 23 people, from the novice who has never picked up hook or needle to those who have been working with yarn for decades, gathering to exchange knowledge, patterns and just have fun.

For the next few months there is a choice of 5 different meeting times per week: Monday at 3 p.m., Tuesday at 10 a.m., Wednesday at 6 p.m., Thursday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. Once the club becomes more settled it is probable that some of the meeting dates/times will change. But for at least the next two months there will be five options each week for interested yarn "addicts" to gather.

Census 2010

As of April 20th the North Judson-Wayne Township Library no longer has any of the census papers in-house. Apparently they have moved on to the next stage and if you haven't filled in a questionnaire you should receive a visit from a census worker sometime in the future.

Howdy, mom let me do the write up about the READ Fur Me, Jr. Story Hour program for May 1st. She said we were going to do something about hands today. Maybe that means that everyone is going to pet me! Anyway, if you come you'll get to hear a story or two, make something and learn a fingerplay. Hey, you'll have to use your hands for those last two things. I'll be waiting for you at the library at 11 a.m.

After that's all done I'll be hanging around for some of you older kids to READ to me. While mom reads well I always like to hear other people read to me. So from 12 noon until 3 p.m. I'll be waiting at the library. Hope you'll stop in to share a book with me.

Local Children's Author to do Book Signing

On Saturday, April 17th, local author Ingrid Odenthal will be reading her book "The Warm Heart" at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library as part of our National Library Week celebration.

The reading will take place at 11:15 a.m. as part of READ Fur Me, Jr. and afterwards Mrs. Odenthal will be available until 2 p.m. to sign copies of her book.

If you came to the North Judson-Wayne Township Library on February 6 you might have had a difficult time finding a place to park. Beside the children and parents who came for the READ and READ, Jr. programs and the typical Saturday library patrons, the library was flooded with visitors to the new “North Judson Framed” exhibit sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

All day visitors toured the main floor and lower level of the library, enjoying exhibits, photos and memorabilia donated by, or on loan from, members of the community. In some cases they were able to clear up questions about photos by furnishing information about the scenes or people in them. In addition to viewing the exhibit, visitors were able to sign up to become a Friend of the Library and for a chance to win a lap afghan crocheted by Linda Leonard, which was won by Alice F. Dolezal of San Pierre.

But this exhibition would not have been possible without the contributions made by the Friends of the Library, who provided frames and other resources; Sandy Whitenack, who took on the enormous task of framing the photos and displaying them, and the memorabilia, to their best advantage; Kareen Nielsen, who ably assisted Sandy; and Craig Roher, who is working on the ongoing project “A Walk Down Lane Street” project.

To these individuals, as well as everyone who has ever purchased anything at a Friends of the Library fundraiser (Mint Festival Book Sale, cookie walk, pie sale, Mint Festival Beauty Pageant Concession stand), the North Judson-Wayne Township Library would like to express their deepest thanks.Your contributions not only help to support the library, but the community as a whole.

Holiday Hours

North Judson-Wayne Township Library will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed Christmas Day. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 26th.

For New Year’s Eve, the Library will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 31st and will be closed all day January 1st. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on January 2nd.

Every Time A Bell Rings...

While Angels work hard year round, it’s that time of year when they increase their numbers and their good works. And the North Judson-Wayne Township Library will once again be doing our part to help them. Donations will be accepted from November 28th until December 14th, when the items will be packaged for distribution.

We will have our Angel Tree up for donations of non-perishable foods, grocery vouchers, laundry detergent, personal items (such as soap, shampoo, and deodorant), and new, unwrapped gifts for children. Gently used, clean coats will also be accepted. Contact Vicky Reetz at 896-2841 after 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the sizes needed for clothing donations or if you are interested in sponsoring a child or family.

Everything that is received by the library will be distributed within Starke County by North Judson organizations.

Christmas Treats for Our Troops

The North Judson-Wayne Township Library will once again be taking Christmas donations for our troops in Afghanistan. This year it is requested that only food items be sent as no hygiene items are needed. Collection will be start on November 16th and will end on November 30th so the items can be packed and shipped out by December 2nd.

Please remember that NO PORK products are allowed in the country. Single-serving items are preferred that can be carried by individual soldiers. The following is a list of suggested items:

Cans of soup, chili, tuna, chicken, etc.

Tuna and salmon in pouches

Crystal Lite or similar individual flavored packets for single water bottles

Beef jerky

Pringles cans

Canned nuts

Candy, gum, granola bars

Canned fruits

Cocoa packet

Ghosties and goblins, among others,gave a preview of Halloween night on October 24th at the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library’s Halloween program. The program was in cooperation with the Mint Festival’s Fall Festival. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not provide the best fall weather, so people missed fun, games, food, crafts, and costumed youngsters on parade between the raindrops. Library Halloween Party

All manner of costumed mortals from preschool through 5th grade are invited to the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library on October 24th for our annual Halloween Party.

Sign-up for costume judging will begin at 10:15 a.m. and will end at 10:50 a.m., judging will be at 11 a.m. After a parade through town to show off the costumes, the winners will be announced.

Then from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a Goblin Game Grove for younger or more sensitive visitors, and – for those brave enough – our annual Haunted House.

Create/Donate a Fleece Blanket

Interested in learning how to tie a fleece blanket? A class is forming at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library for November 3rd at 6:30 p.m.

Price is $10 and you need to bring your own materials. However, if you make two blankets and donate one of them for this year’s Angel Tree, you will get a discount.

GED Classes Return

Starting September 9th GED classes returned to the North Judson-Wayne Township Library. Classes will be held on Monday nights from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Anytime that the North Judson-San Pierre School System cancels classes due to bad weather, GED classes will also be canceled.

Closed Columbus Day

READ Fur Me, Jr.

Hooowdy, my name is Anubis and I would like to share some of my favorite books with you.

Starting in September I will be part of a new program for dog lovers from preschool through 2nd grade called “READ Fur Me, Jr.”

Join me at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. I’ve arranged for someone to read you some of the books I have enjoyed as part of the regular “READ Fur Me” program.

Be sure you sign up so we can keep track of how many sessions you attend. When all the spaces on your card have been punched by the staff, you’ll get to pick something out of the treat drawer and my mommy promises there won’t be any old bones.

New Service at the Library

The North Judson-Wayne Township Library recently purchased a Xyron 510 Creative Station which can laminate items up to 5 inches wide. For the price of $1 per item we can provide protection for those important items that you carry in your wallets.

READ Fur Me

With school starting on August 18th we haven't planned much for the month; there is just too much to do to get ready for classes and, especially for 4-H members, to get in a bit of last minute relaxation.

However, we will have "READ Fur Me" sessions on Saturday, August 15th, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. and again on Thursday, August 20th, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
